Ok, after playing shooter games online since 2006 ive come to the painful conclusion that no matter how much you play and how much you practice, if you arent born naturally good at them, youll never be.

Im 36 now. Over the years ive played them all. Cod mw, bo, halo, the BF games, etc. Its so frustrating that after all these years i have nothing to show skill wise. Yeah ill occasionally get 20 kills and 7 deaths in infinite warfare, but thats very rare. Most of the time i have more deaths than kills no matter what the game is. Ill have a good match every now and then but its never consistent.

When im playing against dudes that are constantly doing 30 kills 4 deaths with apparent relative ease, it really pisses me off to the extreme. I mean whats the secret? I really hate it too because i love fps games so much. Ive been seriously considering just giving up on video games completely. The stress and frustration over the years playing them online hasnt been fun at all...

We get slower as we get older. If you play a game enough, muscle memory will take over and play for you. Sometimes doing that is better than actually thinking about it.

Yeah you're kind of right TC. I'm not sure that you have to be born "good". But I'm pretty good at shooters and have a friend who I've grown up with who has always played the same games I have. We're both 37 years old so we've been through them all. But by god is he terrible at shooters. He likes playing them but I just don't get it. He has 530 hours on Overwatch to my 280 and the difference is like night and day.

If you don't enjoy them and aren't any good I suggest you just stick to other types of games.

I know the feeling. In my teens and early 20's I was near unstoppable (among my mates on games like Halo, Time splitters, Goldeneye, Quake 3) and would destroy most who challenged me, only a friend of mine that I still play with a lot could match me on FPS games, now I am in my 30s though and I often find myself struggling to keep up with younger players, reflex is important in shooters. Perhaps looking at the way you play shooters and play on your strengths from experience on playing tactically, from taking the reflex route I now play as a support in games like battlefield and lay down cover and support my team mates, rather than running and gunning like I would when I was younger.

When playing online, play on a monitor instead of a big screen TV.

I don't know what your internet speed is, but speed does matter to a certain point.

Last one, make sure you have vibration off on your controller.

Worse tips ever.
Let me give you some better ones:
- Know the map (very important)
- Know your weapons/equipment and how the game mechanics work.(also very important)
- Only sprint when necessary (takes longer to aim out of a sprint)
- Change the aiming settings to better fit your needs
- Aim before you start shooting (common newbie mistake)
- Switching to your secondary is usually faster than reloading (goes back to game mechanics)

Both points here are true. The second one can sometimes be a negative too. If you pick up bad habits early in your... Fps career for a lack of better term, they can stick with you for years. Rushing to the center of the map for example is something some of my friends just won't ever stop doing.

I know I have some bad habits but I can't think of any I have for fps atm. However MMOs, I always have a problem focusing too much on my Hotbars in boss fights and not the boss himself. I miss his telegraphs for his moves and die way more than I should. Even knowing I have this problem, it's still hard to break.

I'd suggest trying a popular map and weapon, record some of your gameplay and then find a YouTube video of a great player and see what they do different.

As we get older we start to lose some of that skill. I hit #2 in the world on Rainbow 6 lockdown when I was a teen. No way in hell could I do that now. One advantage we have is experience. Always think of what your opponent may do and then think of a way to out smart them. A way to trick them into exposing their flank to you. You can find ways to get really good at some shooters even if you have bad aim, I'd suggest playing games with higher TTK (time to kill) if that's the case though.

For CoD, a few things I like to do:
Private match: turn off the timer, explore every map without other players/bots. Learn the layouts and the angles. When you've gotten comfortable with the map, add in recruit bots, then regular bots.

Test different weapons and equipment during those sessions. Kill yourself/get killed to switch loadouts.

I don't know TC, when COD 4 came out I was terrible. Then with each installment I've gotten slightly better until black ops when I really busted out. I believe most of it comes from practice, and learning how to play to your strengths. I figured out I am better with a silenced class then I was with guns blazing straight up the middle. When I play to my skills I do much better.

You got to play, play and play. Figure out what strategies you're good with and what you suck at then play to your strengths. Try all game modes and find out what you're best at and stick with it.

I tend to suck when playing team deathmatch type modes, but you don't want to cross me on objective based modes like capturing flags or holding bases. I was able to get the number 1 spot and hold it for a couple months in the war leaderboards on CoD:WaW back when it came out. I was 28 then (36 now).

There are exceptions to the rule, of course. Tom Brady, Jaromir Jagr, etc. The few who defy aging beyond their peers are not the norm. I'm in my mid-30s and it's looking like I will only be able to play dek hockey for another couple seasons at most because my knees are getting bad but I see guys down there still playing in their 50s (and they're better than me! lol)

Same here. I'm 40 and I'm usually the top scorer when I play my FPS of choice. All those years of video games has sharpened my mind.

Do e-sports have age limits? They seriously can't tell me I'm too old to play can they?

One important factor in becoming good at FPS is experimenting with the controller settings and sensitivity. Once you get your settings down you can, adjust each game to have similar control feels. Also, you might be an inverted Y-axis player, so try that if you haven't.

It would be a little funny if that switch after all this time was the missing puzzle piece to him playing like a pro though.

You never know.
Inverted makes more sense to me.
I think of the character's head as the analog stick.
So if you want to look up, you have to tilt your head back.
But it was Ace Combat on the PS1 that made me this way.

That was funny. I didn't really think about it, but I guess inverted flight controls would be the opposite of inverted FPS controls. So you should play inverted in a FPS but not in a flying game. Pulling back to look up is the natural way.

For me, it's not that my age has slowed me down, but that I have no patience. I watch my son play, and he has just enough patience. Not like camping douchebag patience, but enough patience in every situation. I do good in a game where my entire team is playing like me, kind of a non-stop push-their-shit-in blitzkrieg, but when we get that one douchebag who spawns and takes cover and starts shooting, then we start spawning on that douchebag.... that's where my game falls apart.

TC, if you have tried your best, spent thousands of hours playing FPS games online and still haven't gotten better and are frustrated by it then maybe just stick with single player campaigns. Nothing wrong with being a SP gamer only.

Anyways i definitely need to start fresh and adopt a new technique. Ive always wanted to be a better player online. Its extremely frustrating and depressing sometimes. The private match exploring and memorizing maps seems like it could be helpful.

The first and third are actually good pieces of advice. Monitors are known to have better refresh/response times than TVs. And a few pros I've seen say they turn off the vibration because it interferes with their aiming.

I turn 45 on Sunday and my best days are definitely behind me. I have arthritis in my hands and a pinched nerve in my right shoulder. The arthritis makes gaming uncomfortable and sometimes painful but the pinched nerve cause me the most issues. There are times when my right hand, my thumb in particular, gets the shakes like I have Parkinson's to the point where my aiming is totally off. There is a history of that in my family so I thought it might have been early onset but the doctor said it wasn't that. Sometimes I have trouble getting coffee or sugar into a cup without spilling it everywhere. It's not all the time but it happens enough that I don't bother with mp games.
