https://mynintendonews.com/2017/08/09/nintendos-only-supplier-of-switch-screens-is-slashing-its-workforce/
Disappointing news today as the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Japan Display, who is the sole supplier for the screens behind the Nintendo Switch, is slashing its workforce by 30 percent. The reason for this is due to significant losses in recent times. The company has apologised for the poor management of the company and says that a drastic restructuring is due to take place as soon as possible.

Hopefully Nintendo can either be open to new suppliers or Japan Display get their business sorted quickly. Others sources say they're only considering it so maybe it'll work out smoothly.

Will this ultimately mean less screens for the Switch though?

The last article says they're wanting to close a domestic plant to shift more work force to a nearby better equipped facility so it's possible that in the higher tech facility they could keep production constant. Also that the reason for their rough patch might be due to Apple moving away from LCD so it's possible even with a reduction in production Nintendo would still have more available to them. What is worrying is that they seem to be wanting to shift more to vehicle LCD panels and possibly OLED screens.

This shouldn't have an impact on supply. After all, manufacturing is primarily done by robots.

Probably not. Nintendo should have a contract that protects their supply and Japan Display should be taking steps to avoid losing customers.

In the worst case Nintendo might need to swap suppliers and that could raise costs for them.

I guess this also slightly increases the chances of a Switch model with an OLED screen.

This is why companies have a business plan in place encase problems like this were to pop up.

So Wall Street Journal? The same site that edited a PewDiePie video to make him look like a racist and then reported it as news. I wouldn't trust them that much.

I mean you can ignore every other site reporting this too I guess. Just search Japan Display news. As far as pewdiepie goes I don't care if he's racist or not it doesn't matter. Try and make a Death to all Jews 'joke' and see how long people want to do business with you.

Eouldnt that make it more expensive? You have to consider brightness too for when playing outside.

Hey, remember when I was talking about the likelihood of a "TV Only" Switch revision for cheap?

Yeah, I'm still putting money on that

I mean if this does turn into a problem it would be on Nintendo for not having a backup plan for supply.
