Is this something they have updated out or is it still the limit for eShop, and if so is it per memory card? I'm about four away and too many goodies coming out lol.

Can you use two memory cards? I've partitioned out a 256 on it, loads up fast without issue. Wonder if I could just get a 32gb and download all the little Indies on it and then use the other for the bigger games.

Would be a good reason to buy a new 2ds as well since I don't need to crack open the back to switch the cards. I was just surprised I was that close

Anything that generates an icon counts towards the limit, I think. So if you had 299 games, made a folder, and put the games in the folders, you'd still be at the limit.

At least, that's what I've always understood. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. While I'm mostly digital, I doubt I will be hitting the limit and I buy a LOT of games.

Seriously. I don't even have two full folders of demos, and those are FREE (I initially downloaded every demo I saw in the eshop for the first few years)

Built in apps count towards the limit, so it's actually less than 300.

Yes. Each card gets its own limit. You might have some headaches with your physical games when it comes to updates or StreetPass, but other than that you should be fine.

Ahh, well s*** I'll just get another 32 gb and put all of my Indies and small games on that.

Also 300 games. I've about 1300 on steam. I work in the industry and am a lead concept artist as well as a developer, I buy a lot of games to see what's out there. Also I don't know why I buy them half the time or what in the hell chicken wiggle even was but I just bought that for some reason. It will become relevant to me at some point lol

I really need to stop. Done with steam purchases, I've enough genres to compare for a long, long time.

You can always buy two SD Cards. I actually have around 240-260 games or so, though at least 40 of them are retail. So it's not that unreasonable to me that someone would have over 300 games.

Yes, yes it is. I don't even own 300 steam games. And most of those are under 10 dollars.

My entire activity log currently contains less than 200 games, even counting DS titles and ~100 demos

You can buy as many as you want, but you can only have 300 installed at once, and folders, badges, and items inside folders count toward the limit. The limit is in the NAND memory on the system motherboard, not per SD card. The limit is because the home menu icon locations are stored in a database, and the database only has 300 rows for information, tracking what icon is in which home menu position. Nintendo has chosen not to expand it, probably for some sort of compatibility reason.

You can always shuffle what games are currently installed, as uninstalling a game removes the database entry, freeing it up for something else.0-172 posted...

Yes, depending on model of 3DS, there is only 1 or 2 GB of NAND memory, which is used to store the operating system, DSiWare titles, settings for various system apps, tickets for software and DLC you have purchased, and the Home Menu icon location database. The 1 GB units on latest firmware only have about 200 MB of free space. Some of that is reserved for DSiWare, which also has its own limit on icons.

They picked 300 as the limit because it is hard to reach that on the size of SD card they officially support, which is 32 GB. Up to 512 GB works, but is not officially supported since you have to prepare the card with a computer first. Anything larger than a 128 GB card risks you reaching the limit fairly easily.

Doesn't help, because the limit on installed software is in NAND, not the SD card. Icon locations are stored in NAND, so if you shuffle multiple cards, you have them fight over icon locations, since the system sees the icons from the other card as still there, just invisible to you, so you are swapping icon locations when you seem to be placing in empty space. The console wasn't designed to be used with multiple cards. If you need that much space, just buy a bigger card since the system can use up to 512 GB at once (maybe more but larger cards aren't out yet). You cannot bypass the 300 title limit without a modified system.
I got a 128 in my system but that 300 limit kills it

le sigh

Ahh it's peanuts in cost. I mean steam is sales so the 3ds is the money muncher. I'd probably be better buying physical. Would have done so had I been aware of the limit lol. Oh well. Quite a low limit tbh

I was just curious if over the recent updates if Nintendo upped the cap like Sony did..

Either way you can use two sd cards and it works on a system transfer, so any sd cards (plural) can transfer but only to the target system, so basically I can put all my Indies and VC stuff on a little 64gb and then keep the rest in my normal card. Just need to swap em. Ive not hit the cap, but it's surprising to hit the cap in general, didn't notice how much I'd gotten over the years.

I always go physical unless I either get a massive discount, or there isn't a physical version. I have a 64 gb card in my N3DSXL and honestly, it's not going to fill unless you always buy EVERYTHING digital or you mess with the Badge Arcade.

Do badges on top of folders count towards the limit? I didn't know badges actually counted towards the limit...if I eliminate my badges, I could get some free slots

Yes they do. Every badge and folder placed on the home menu takes a database row. So a folder with a badge takes 2 of the database slots, and reduce you to 298 installed icons. System applications also count, so you start with about 292 remaining icons available when you get the system, and you can't uninstall system apps without a modified system.

Also, about 3000 badges are available in the Badge Arcade, but the system can only store 1000 badges on it, and you can only place up to the 300 icon limit.

Folder count too. Best thing I've just seen for myself as I've a spare 3dsxl, use two memory cards. They can both transfer to the target system as well, very simple. Keep the large games on one card and VC/Indie/Shovelware on another. Beats carrying around a backpack full of carts Imo. Gaming is a luxury so while I've bought a lot of games, it's not much money out if my budget. I'm just surprised there was a limit and also I've hit it on this system.

Apparently I have to spell it out for you. If you're going to spend ludicrous amounts of money on games, it's your own fault that you've reached a "wall". (whether it's a limit in how much you're allowed to spend on a game in a single purchase, or on how many games you can install at once). You'll just have to deal with your choices.

I don't feel sorry for OP one bit.

Even if you can afford to spend thousands of dollars on shovelware, there's no reason you can't uninstall games you aren't playing anytime soon, right? It's not like I carry every DS and 3DS game I own in my pockets.

Not sure where I'm complaining or asking for sympathy there. I'll just get another SD card. My steam account is ludicrous, least a cap exists that I'm about to hit on this thing. Steam I honestly just buy games to test out features and see what the competition is like. The world of a conceptual artist and developer, gotta play em all.
