- Rumor: Nintendo Switch might be getting an achievement system!!!
This is something I've been asking for since before the Wii U came out. And for some reason, was always met with backlash. Don't get it. They're just little activities you can do after you've beaten the main game, and can be used for bragging rights. Another great feature for completionists. If this feature comes to the system, I'd definitely be willing to put more time into games to get these trophies.
I also feel like Nintendo would be the ones to do it the best. I feel like IF we get an achievement system, it'll actually mean something, and we can probably use our points to buy stuff off of MyNintendo. Another thing I thought they should have done on Wii U, just with Club Nintendo (R.I.P.) Anyways, I'm excited if it comes. http://nintendoeverything.com/lichtspeer-dev-mentions-nintendo-is-working-on-an-achievement-system-for-switch/

I can see being for or indifferent towards achievements. But anyone who is actively against them is an ignorant buffoon.

If Nintendo adds system wide achievements, that's fine. But let's not pretend there isn't better things they could be working on, better online and voice chat, save transfers, better Eshop functionality, VC etc.

Wii U NNID - Wingo84 ----- 3DS FC - 2122-7025-10131) System wide Achievements are pointless and an unneeded feature design for peoples pissing contests. One doesn't need to be able to see your Mario Kart trophies in Splatoon and you don't need to show off to claim your better because you have them. They only have relevance to the game at hand you obtained them in.
2) Forcing devs to make Achievements in games that don't have them is a waste of their time. It also leads to stupid easy achievements like turn on game, play easy mode, or kill first enemy. It also leads to broken ones no one in their right mind would want to do.Just like Rockstar Games, ports of recent games to a new system, Ubisoft games, Bethesda games, paid online and various other things, Achievements will be one of those "it's s*** until we actually got it, then it's suddenly good" things for Nintendo fans.

lol, that logic. No, if devs put in easy achievements it's because they wanted to. The ones you describe also account for like a minuscule fraction of all achievements.
Lastly, broken =/= you being a scrub with no skill and/or the ability to commit to anything
Legitimate broken achievements exist, those can never be unlocked even if the criteria is met or say a server is shut off. Achievements that are difficult or grindy have their reasons for existing.PSN/XBL/Steam: mcnichoj | Switch FC: Ask

And even with all those people working on things we still got the horrible implementation of voice chat, barebones eshop, saves locked on your system, no VC, friend codes, yada yada yada.
Again, if they do add system wide achievements, great. They effect alot. Games online with trophies people quit more than with out on systems as they need the online trophy. Some games on ps4 that are really short get more of a pass as trophies add replay (would much rather have a good longer game)
when browsing on games like LBP so many levels are "____ trophy" that it ruins the experience imagine if super mario creator comes to switch but all the levels are just easy trophies.
They also encourage online bullying I've been in games where people of gone "he's only gamer level 7 kick him" there's no need.
Also message boards for games get filled with "quickest way to get ___" and important topics get lost buried under trophy or achievement stuff.
They are toxic. I love my ps4 but honestly I'd pay £59.99 extra a year to not have to play with the kids who want a pat on the back for stupid tjingsike "press start" or who will be only using a weak weapon online in a team match to get trophy or rage quit ect.....Signature, What's that?TsC_PoLiTiKz posted...The fact that when so many of you think of achievements you think of ridiculously easy crap is very telling.

All trophies/achievements do for players is provide digital, shareable checklists of things you can already do in game. They create visibility, not new possibilities. Its because their one of the many negative aspects of modern gaming
Unlockables are now DLC
Cheat codes are also DLC
Finally the old in game method to unlock those unlockables were turned into Acheivements/trophies
I typically find supporters of such to be younger gamers but for older gamers the system is a farce a shiny penny to to get gamers to look the other way. Your still rewarded properly for exploration and gameplay in many Nintendo and even PC games. However in other games they just ping the soulless achievement instead. Today's modern gamer is easily distracted by shiny things.
I game like Zelda your rewarded for hitting all the shrines but a game like AC on other consoles all you get is a ping. Because devs just lazily slapped that on since they system is available instead of adding something deserving.Ignorance is Bliss...Karmic Dragon2003 posted...abear90 posted...

They were extremely challenging, even for four people who played often, and at the end we were rewarded with unique armor in the game that I used from that point on.
That kind of usage of achievements might be the exception and not the rule, but the fact that it exists at all shows that you are wrong in your arbitrary label of "f***ing meaningless."
But you could have done the exact same thing even if it wasn't an achievement.
.....no, we couldn't have. The point was that the game developer, Bungie in this case, set up a set of difficult achievements, where some of them literally required that you play through a portion of the game's campaign online with 3 other people. The reward for collecting all of the achievements was the rare armor set.
If any of us wanted that armor set, our only option was to get all of the achievements required for it, all of those achievements spread through the game's single and multiplayer modes...
We would have never all played the campaign under the conditions the achievement required, which ended up being very fun, if none of us actually wanted the armor set reward.abear90 posted...stekim40 posted...

Look sunshine, not everyone who dislikes this garbage is a fanboy, I have a Switch, PS4 pro and XB1S and I don't mind saying I really dislike achievements and trophies as they encourage the worst in gamers and set a poor mindset on the weak willed kiddies. At the end of the day, achievements and trophies mean ZERO, jack squat. I don't care if you have 10 billion gamerscore or you have 500 platinum trophies, its f***ing meaningless.
Now.. the original idea behind achievements was to be able to "spend" the points and get free stuff, including games, but that was quickly dumped and achievements then became purely worthless but I've seen first hand what they do to easily lead people. I'm happy the Switch doesn't have them. hope it stays that way.
If achievements are "f***ing meaningless," then so are online multiplayer ranking systems, difficulty levels in single player campaigns, or trying to "beat" single player games. Hell, playing games at all is "f***ing meaningless" when you look at things with this attitude.

You seem to have things confused.
The game determined you would get that reward because of your actions within it.
The achievement exists external to the game, at the system/console level, which the game notifies after a task is performed.
If the achievement system didn't exist, the same course of actions would have led to the same reward. The game just wouldn't tell the console that task X had been completed. Achievements don't provide in-game rewards because they aren't really part of the game, but they occasionally coincide with those rewards because they're tied to certain actions.- Boards

I'm not confused at all. I'm quite familiar with how these things work. Here's what you seem to be missing. MS made an API to keep track of game accomplishments that developers can use. It would be stupid not to use something that already exists at a system level like that. It's like saying that every game that wants to let you chat with friends should write its own chat client and UI interface. The 360 already had chat built in at a system level, so why would you reimplement it yourself?
It's the same exact thing with this. These particular achievements were added after the initial game launch. The game itself had no UI for managing looking at whether you've accomplished little one-off tasks. Why would they not use an API that already exists literally for that purpose to do it? Would they have been less likely to add on something like this if they literally needed to make their own API and/or UI so the player could keep track of what he's already done?
You're assuming that if system wide achievements hadn't been available, Bungie could have added their own in-game system. But that's a big assumption to make. The point of big system-wide APIs like achievements like this is it makes it trivial for developers to add features that they might otherwise not have had time to do or might not wanted to do.SSjYagami posted...I hope it is optional, but I am excited.

You've seemingly missed the point I was making.
That API is how the game notifies the achievement system that a task was completed.
The game itself determines that a task will give a reward is given and separately that an achievement will be issued to the console level through that API.
The achievement doesn't cause you to get an in game reward. It's just something that happens at the same time at different levels (game vs. console). That was the point I was making.
I wasn't saying anything about whether or not Bungie could or should or would have made an in-game achievement system, but rather that the entire achievement concept as it exists is essentially a programming afterthought when it comes to in-game rewards.BladeManEXE posted...

I understand that for a one-off "complete this task and unlock this reward" type achievement, that could easily be done by the game itself, if desired.
My point was that for this particular example, the reward was something that you unlocked after completing several different tasks across several different modes of the game. It's not something you could just accomplish and get instant feedback : "you've unlocked this armor." The player would need a way to see which of the 3(in this case) tasks he has completed to measure his progress towards completing all of them. There is no way I would attempt to do something that requires completing 3 different tasks before a reward is given without getting some kind of intermediate feedback after completing each task. You don't want to waste time doing something if you don't even know if you're doing it to the game's expectations.
So in this case, it would have greatly added the amount of work needed for the developer to add on this type of reward system. Like I said in my first point, they would have to build out their own ui so the player could monitor progress towards this specific set of in game actions, a feature that already exists in the form of the achievements API.abear90 posted...BladeManEXE posted...

Instead of checking against achievements, all they need do is set a few Boolean for whether or not the tasks had been completed. And when all three are set to true, give the armor.

You seem to have completely skipped over my point that for large sets of tasks, the player needs some sort of UI progress tracker or immediate feedback when single tasks within the set are accomplished. We must have different definitions of need then. One of the tasks in the Halo example I've been referring to was to complete the last mission of the campaign, with 3 other people, online, on the hardest difficulty setting, with a specific difficulty modifier turned on, with all 4 people finishing the level in a certain vehicle. It is extremely specific and took 4 experienced players several hours to complete. This was one of 3 accomplishments needed to earn the armor set. And you're saying that receiving notification and a way to verify that we've completed this gigantic task is optional? I already said this, but there is no way I would have bothered spending roughly two hours on something that challenging without being able to verify that I've done it to the game's standards after I thought I had completed it.People received backlash for asking about it because they complained as if not having them was a huge problem.
People like me don't care if they're here or not. It's just very annoying when someone talks as if not having a list of pointless little icons and therefore not being congratulated for any stupid s*** you accomplish is a big flaw.
Hopefully Nintendo will at least tie them with My Nintendo and launch them with the Switch category. Then they won't be pointless."Deadpool is just as formulaic the Avengers films it so relentlessly strives not to be."For me, it was never the general inclusion of achievements that I disliked. It was how they made anything and everything into some sort of achievement. This includes normal play of the game, as if you needed some incentive to keep playing to the end besides the game itself. "Complete Chapter One" is one of the most noticeable. "Kill <x> of this enemy" when you'll likely go through 10x of those enemies in a single play through is another. Achievements, to me, are something out of the ordinary, that you'd push yourself to do that some may not care or feel they could. Something that requires effort and/or skill. A super-hard enemy, for example. A long string of hits in a combo where your opponent is flopping all over the place. Completing chapters with just your bare hands in a game that generally changes up weapons that better fit each section.
Think of a game like Joe and Mac on the SNES. A game where you start with basically clubs that do nothing special. In the game, you can acquire weapons that shoot off from your club, like bones, fire, etc, allowing you to kill things with some range. But, instead of getting any of those, you try and beat the game with just your normal club, so you'd have to deal with close-combat the entire time."When you've got no argument, say something bad about <x>."

Yes, it's optional.
Is it less clear what needs to be done or convenient to see if you'd done it? Definitely. But unless you are physically required to look at the achievements and have notifications turned on, it's doable without it. Hence it is absolutely optional. I don't know if you've noticed this, but words have different meanings depending on context. Technically having access to running water is "optional" to survive, but you would be hard pressed to find someone in a first world country calling that "optional" in any sense. Nothing is truly "mandatory" in gaming, but there are little conveniences that make the experience actually tolerable, and that, to me, is the category that this whole thing falls under. I would prefer the streamlined, convenient approach over a game that wastes my time. And that's all this really comes down to in the end.DiscostewSM posted...For me, it was never the general inclusion of achievements that I disliked. But there are stats out there that show that people don't even beat the game. Let's take a game like the first Uncharted on the PS3, which wasn't a long game. According to the console's trophy stats (not PSN Profiles), only 37.3% of people beat the game on Easy difficulty. PSNProfiles has almost 550k owners with that game on their list, so the number is definitely a lot higher in real life. Now, this isn't the true number of people who have beaten the game, as not everyone has access to internet and can sync their trophies, but it still shows that less than 50% of the people beat the game.
Other than that, though, I do agree that achievements that are actually challenging are better. One of my proudest platinums on the PS3 was for Mirror's Edge and those time trials in that game could prove to be a pain.PSN: Akimitsu782Mandrew257 posted...SPDShadowRanger posted...

Pretty sure that exactly two people on this board would try to defend it, with one of them only typing single sentences and ending about half of them with ellipses.Indie games aren't 3rd party games- TalesRevenant
You give Sony $60. They refund you $60. You give them $60 again. That's $120 to Sony. - Someone on this siteDiscostewSM posted...For me, it was never the general inclusion of achievements that I disliked.
But, instead of getting any of those, you try and beat the game with just your normal club, so you'd have to deal with close-combat the entire time.
Finally, Someone gets it.FC: 1977 - 0616 - 0040

Even assuming these people you speak of are real, they aren't defending region locking. They would just be defending X platform that still has it.
People's opinions of achievements aren't tied to platform. There is an argument to actually be had, unlike regionlocking which was just anti consumer.FC: 1977 - 0616 - 0040

Achievements really are quite the advancement. I've stopped watching movies until cinemas implement an achievement system. Made it through the first ten minutes of Apocalypse Now? Gold star.
Why are art galleries so behind the times? They're 100 gens behind and calling their experience "unique".
I played tennis for 2 hours yesterday and didn't leave with a single achievement; what is this archaic s***? Disappointed! Also, why isn't there a better streaming option? It's so convoluted, I had to tie my phone to the fence so that my twitch subs could watch the match. Fix this, tennis.LuigiFan835 posted...And if it does happen, there will be countless topics of people begging Nintendo to remove achievements. f***ing bulls***.
Well if they listen to all the whining and crying to add them, it would only be fair to listen to the others too :PPS4 Pro - Elite Dangerous, Legendary edition - Current ship: Anaconda

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
So they are implementing it just for the sake of the feature and not because fans want it? Baha, do you even know how a business works?"Links to GameFAQs statistics is trolling. Indeed. He already has the perfect excuse for why Nintendo will implement those filthy trophies. It's not because they listened to those "whiny crybabies", of course not. They wouldn't put themselves down and taint their dignity like that. It's because they simply wanna add more features. They are adding for the sake of adding. You see, Nintendo isn't like other business that aim to please their customers. Nintendo is superior to that. They do whatever they wanna do. f*** what everyone else thinks. Well I sure hope the system if they are making one is optional. It should be on developers rather or not they want to utilize the feature."He may be Mr. Clean, but his soul will always be dirty!"The biggest problem is consumers outlook on games for their trophies and not for the game itself.
Yeah, the internet is full of lots of trolls and keyboard warriors, but they still raise Cain if things don't go there way. Case in point, Sonic Mania. I dunno how many, "I'm not getting this game on PS4!" threads I've seen because Mania doesn't have a platinum trophy! To hell with how good the game may be (actually is in this case). No shiny trophy, no game. Sadhonestly I don't want switch to have achievements. Not because I don't want them. Mostly because I see Nintendo making devs lock some achievements behind amiibos. -_-. Want to platinum a game? Well you have to use this amiibo to get this in game item and use this in game item (THAT IS ONLY OBTAINABLE WITH A CERTAIN AMIIBO) to do this particular task.If you can't play a video game without kindergarten ego sticker trophies, you are not a gamer. Period.
I swear modern day gaming is so s***.
Do I need an achievement...
Going to the bathroom?
Going to work?
Going to get my paycheck?
Going to buy food?
Going to the gym?
Going to hangout with friends?
Going to f*** a college snowbunny?
No, I don't. Why? Because nobody gives a living s*** unless it's your family and close friends/school teachers."My Theories Will Cure You!"genesis145 posted...Mostly because I see Nintendo making devs lock some achievements behind amiibos.
That's highly unlikely. Even if it's a exclusive, devs will always think ahead and consider the possibility of porting that game to other consoles eventually. They'd have to create new trophies for that, and I don't think they care so much about Amiibos to actually have that extra work in the future."Links to GameFAQs statistics is trolling. They had skyrim of all games use amiibos....idk if that was the devs choice or Nintendo but if it was Nintendo I see them forcing that with achievements.Baha05 posted...PS4Warrior posted...

If they were doing it as a feature it would have already been on the Wii U or the Switch. Same with stopping the region locking. People complained and Nintendo listened.PS4 - Because it was the next gen console i was the most interested in.
