I think most people just forgot the Wii U existed, tbh. This. The Wii U had been dead for a year before the Switch came out, getting a version of THE Switch launch game doesn't really change that. |
Openly associating anything that has to do with the Wii U with the Switch would probably be bad for its image.

Well, for me I hated Breath of the Wild on the Wii U, but on Switch it's absolutely fantastic. The gamepad is a clumsy and uncomfortable controller, and the ability to pop the Switch in and out of sleep mode in a couple seconds means it's way easier to just log a little bit of time in games when you don't have the time for a long play, or you don't want to play for an extended period. I wouldn't say the Switch is worth it just for that, but it certainly makes BotW a much better game.

The same reason people forget that Twilight Princess was also on the GameCube nobody wanted a GameCube but everyone was rushing out to buy a Wii similarly nobody wanted a Wii U but lots of people are rushing out to buy a Switch

Because you can't just get a Wii U. No one sells them anymore. Nintendo made sure to make it by March, it was nearly impossible to find one anywhere and they never dropped the price. (because they knew if people could, they totally would have taken that route) You pretty much have to buy one second half if you want one, and they're not even cheap when you buy them that way. It's an option if you already have a Wii U, but if you don't actively want a Wii U for other things, you just might as well get a Switch at that point. IMO, anyways.

And if you're itching to buy a new console to play BotW, you're most likely going to try hunting down a Switch as opposed to a Wii U. Except that it's much easier (not to mention cheaper) to get a Wii U off eBay for $60 right now than it is to get a Switch depending on your location. At least until the Odyssey shipments come and there's millions of Switches everywhere. But at that point, why even waste your time with BotW when the one true reason to own Switch is here? Or hell, why waste your time with BotW period? The surest sign that it's a Wii U game through and through is how bad it is. Contrary to popular belief, Wii U flopped because it had no good games. Not because of the name or any of those other stupid reasons. Switch has barely been doing better than Wii U so far because it has no good games. It is practically Wii U 2 complete with a further realization of Wii U's gimmick of "portable console gaming". But Odyssey is changing that. Odyssey is saving Switch. Odyssey is bringing back people that Wii and Wii U turned away.

If you did, it probably doesn't have the Gamepad (and you need a gamepad to set it up) or power cords. Cheapest you'll get right now is $120-150.

Probably because the WiiU really isn't a thing anymore. Manufacturing on the system ceased last year, new games aren't being developed for it, and the Miiverse is being brought down.
Sure, you don't "need" a Switch to play BotW, but it also doesn't make too much sense to currently promote a newer game for a defunct system (rather than promote it for the current system that's selling). People that are interested are already aware of the game's availability on the WiiU. Someone else brought up Persona 5's availability on the PS3, and it really isn't any different. Sure, you don't "need" a PS4 to play it, but it makes more sense to talk about the current system that it's available on. You notice how the Switch and PS4 boards are vastly more busy than the WiiU and PS3 boards are? There's a reason for that.

In most scenarios where they are talking about buying botw and switch, they are talking more about reasons to get a switch rather than ways to play botw. I also imagine most of the people on NVC have completely moved on from Wii U and don't care to mention it. They are a podcast, they talk about what they want to talk about. I guess I'll also just say, I've heard them talk about botw on Wii U several times. One guest even said they're not getting a switch yet and playing botw on Wii U

They constantly say how the switch is practically worth owning just for BOTW.... But u don't need a switch to play it so - do they not know this is a wii u game or deliberate ignorance? You're right that you don't a switch to play it, if you're a wii u owner. But it does perform better(increased resolution and more stable framerate) and you can play with it on the go.
Less is more. Everything you want, isn't everything you need.

Well, BotW on Switch is fully portable, not "move more than five feet away from the TV and oops, now the tablet has dropped the connection with the WiiU" portable, so that is one reason NVC might say this.
The other reason is that they are massive Nintendo shills, but even so, they're right about BotW being worth getting a Switch for, even if you already have a WiiU.

If you don't have either system (and not a lot of people have the Wii U anyway) it's worth picking up the Switch for BotW. They've never said it's exclusive, they've never mentioned there's no other way to play it. It's a simple statement applying to the masses that "The Switch is worth picking up for BotW alone". How is this not hard to grasp?

Probably the same reason people forget Persona 5 is also a PS3 game. I'll be honest: I wasn't even aware that the PS3 version was localized. -Lo- posted... For starters, it was clearly made for Switch. Secondly, only a moron buys a launch game for a dead system over the new one. Technically, it was made for the Wii U (it was even the focus of Nintendo's E3 events last year). Unfortunately, they apparently ditched some of the planned Gamepad functionality and the Wii U version ended up being the inferior version. |
It's mainly because in most cases it's a non-issue. If you're enough of a die-hard Nintendo fan to own Wii U, you probably already own or are planning to buy Switch, so you might as well get the better version. It's not really like with Vita where there's a different demographic that owns Vita compared to PS4.

BOTW is what tipped the scales for me to buy a Switch.
Despite wanting to play the Zelda games, I never did end up getting a WiiU. Besides not wanting it quite enough, there was also the geographical issue. I am currently living and working in Taiwan, being closer to Japan, that is the region where all Nintendo stuff comes from. Region lock means all software would have to be the JP version too. I can't read Japanese.
Learning that the Switch is region free really cemented my decision. Now, for the most part, providing whatever game I'd like has the English language/subtitles option, I can just buy a physical copy at my local game store rather than having to go full digital (or pay import prices) like I had to on my 3DS.http://figmentofreality.deviantart.com/
