- Garbage localizer NISA promises free patch to fix broken Ys 8 translation
http://gematsu.com/2017/10/nis-america-apologizes-quality-ys-viii-localization-fix-due-end-november
And at the same time confirm the PC port will still be more than a month away, when it was supposed to be a simultaneous release. |
At first I thought this was somehow about garbage collection, which I was confused how a developer could patch it.

While there are definitely legit complaints in there, some of it was just overly nitpicking to the point where I wish they wouldn't patch it.

So...who the fuck puts a space after using ellipses when they're not writing an academic paper or something? Putting spaces after punctuation is grammatically accurate. Text in text-heavy things like games and books should be, at bare minimum, grammatically accurate.

Irony posted...sauceje posted...Irony posted...I remember Square Enix games And Chrono Trigger doesn't belong with those other two. While the SNES rpgs had their translation problems, they had more to do with cartridge limitations than with bad translations. More inaccurate than awkward.

tri sapphire posted...So...who the fuck puts a space after using ellipses when they're not writing an academic paper or something? ...Not when it comes to ellipses. Using ellipses in any sense other than academic (in which case it has its own character rather than being three periods in a row, and can only be used to omit part of a quotation) requires nothing other than consistency within the work.

...Not when it comes to ellipses. That's fair. The wikipedia article for Ellipsis doesn't mention which spacing option is the most appropriate for American English (it gives different options), but does mention that, in British English, when it represents a pause, it should be followed by a space. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis#In_American_English

What's the translation comparable to? Like FFVII bad or worse? I haven't played it myself, but from what I gather, the translation feels very dry and literal. The game supposedly has a cracking story, but that's lost because of the poor quality of the translation. It's not Breath of Fire 2 bad, but it's still fairly unacceptable.

There are parts of the game that already have decent English names and NISA changed them to stupid ones. |

Wow, I knew it would be a mess, but how badly did they fuck it up? it was so bad, Ys and Falcom fans held an email campaign to inform Nihon Falcom about the bad localization. it got so big that Japanese news outlets started reporting the story. pretty sure Falcom is forcing NISA to apologize and re-edit the script since NISA pretty much never does anything to fix their shitty localizations. |
