- How do you feel now that Nintendo is slowly phasing out the 3DS?
It came out in 2011. I mean what more do people want?
It has a fantastic library but it’s time to move on. At least with the Switch we can finally get a decent screen from a Nintendo handheld lol.

The Switch doesn't really have many of the kinds of games I want to play. Its focus seems to be on home console games, and I haven't enjoyed many of those types of games for years (not since the PS2/GC/XBox/DreamCast era).
Hopefully though this means that the Switch will start getting more of the kinds of games that fit well on the 3DS and I'll be happier with it.

That's just it though 5 years was the OLD console life span. In credit to sony and microsoft systems have longer life spans now. It used to be every 5 years a new system would come out. Now it's every 7 years. PS3 was 2006 and PS4 2013 launch. Xbox 360 was 2005 and Xbox one 2013. No one is expecting PS5 and the next xbox prior to 2020. Would be nice if Nintendo spread their systems out more and gave their systems longer life spans. I am sure switch owners would be happy not to see a new nintendo system until 2024.

Don’t mind it at all. IMO, the Switch is all that’s really needed anyways. The 3DS lived up all these years. I feel great knowing that this is the end of an era for Nintendo and that I got to live through it instead of the Switch era full of dissapointment lies.. Except I own a Switch so I'm part of that too. :(

Due to my extreme nostalgia and love for DS games from my childhood, i’ll never leave the 3DS family. The combined library for the 3DS (DS games, 3DS games, Virtual Console games) has more than enough content to keep me entertained for a very long time. I have 33 games for my 3DS right now, and my want-list has 113 titles on it. There is no other system that has such an appealing library for me. Between Steam and my Xbox there are like 10 games I enjoy on those.
As for the end of its life, I mean I don’t really think it’s a big deal. Nintendo isn’t being “unfair” or anything, they’ve given it all the glory it’s deserved, and their support has been steady. In an investors conference they pledged 3DS support “throughout 2019 and beyond” so it’s not dead yet, but I won’t be shocked when it does eventually die. I mean there are still titles that are set to be released in 2019 for it, and the “and beyond” part of their statement must mean something. Idk. In regards to the Switch, I don’t really have an interest in it. The battery life, game library, and console size make it less ideal for portable play than the 3DS or Vita, and the low power and tendency to overheat make it less ideal for home-console gaming than my Xbox or computer. All the home-console ports it’s getting are better on Xbox or Playstation or PC, and the library of first-party games is still pretty small. Some of the biggest releases are kinda unappealing imo. I’m not into Smash, and yet the entire Nintendo E3 seemed to revolve around that game. And while BotW is an awesome game, it feels more like Skyrim than Zelda. Skyrim does Skyrim better than BotW ever could. Mario Odyssey is cool, but I have like 20 Mario games that I’m happy with. Splatoon is just a kids game, and unlike Mario and Zelda series I legitimately don’t think it has much adult appeal. The library is still small, and with time I expect it to get bigger and much better, but at the moment it’s severely lacking. Especially since the 3DS Virtual Console library wasn’t carried over. I really only pay attention to the first-party and Switch-exclusive titles, since all the other games are better played on my Xbox or Steam. So to answer your question, I’m not saddened by the end of the 3DS. It’s had a good run, and I’ll always enjoy it. I still play DS and NES and SNES and Gameboy games a ton, and those systems ended a long time ago. progress is good. I just don’t think the Switch represents the kind of progress i’d like to see. Imo Nintendo should’ve gone the opposite way with their next system. Instead of trying to be both a handheld and a home console and ending up being mediocre in both aspects, they should’ve made a really powerful system. Theyve always been on the weak side since the Wii, and their systems have always been dwarfed by Xbox and Playstation in terms of specs. They should’ve turned the tables and made a really powerful system. Imaging a Zelda game that is bigger and has more content than GTAV. Imagine it carrying on Twilight Princess’s attempt at having realistic graphics. Imagine Zelda or Mario games existing on a truly next-generation platform. The switch is more powerful than previous Nintendo consoles, but that’s really not saying much. Nintendo had a chance to blow people out of the water, but instead they created something that performs below the current home-console spec standard and below the current handheld portability standard.

And finally Nintendo Nes: 1983 Snes:1990 Oh dear that's 7 years isn't it? N64: 1996 Six years Gamecube: 2001 Which is 5 years so you got one system right so far Wii: 2006 So you seem to know Nintendo's relese dates. Big surprise there right? Wii U: 2012 Oh this one is six Switch: 2017 And this one's five. So you got there right and they were all Nintendo. Every other console including Nintendo until recently waited six years to launch the next generation. But I did this for no reason because releases for a console have never ceased just because the next one is released. It's usually a year or three before releases dry up. Which is right on course with Nintendo's announcements.

It's called a console cycle. I wonder how many people complaining about the 3DS being phased out have been through gaming generations before. It happens to every system. Of course it does. That's not the point. The point is the Switch has been out for a year and it's fanbase is complaining about the 3DS. Most game consoles have been supported for a few years after the next generation release. Except the 3DS was released a year before the Wii U so it's literally the same generation as the Switch. So you see the Switch shouldn't be the 3DS successor. It shouldn't exist at all. It only exists because of the failure of the Wii U. I don't really mind. I just find it funny that my fellow Switch owners are so insecure about their devices that they have to do whine about it. I'll link that polygon article here too: https://www.polygon.com/2017/6/28/15880698/nintendo-switch-e3-3ds#comments He acts like killing the 3DS will save the Switch and seems like one of those who spends his whole life online saying the Switch doesn't need saving. I'm glad I have switch though both for the games and for the fact I'm going to get to see the dissapointment when Nintendo announced it's actual next gen console or when third party support for it dries up in a year or two when the "next gen" Switch has to compete with the actual next gen. It's kinda hilarious tbh.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me. I bought the 2DS at the end of 2017 for the existing library (which has some phenomenal games). It being phased out won't bother me as I'll continue to play the games I love long after it's "dead". Exactly. While I've been buying handheld systems at launch (3DS and Vita most recently), I've been buying home consoles at the end of their lifespan, PS3 in December of 2016 and Wii U in March of 2017 after the Switch had been released. Of course it helps that there were only a few games on both I wanted to play after all that time, and even now, five years after the release of the PS4 there's only some five games I want to play on that (RE:Make 2 and the Life is Strange sidestory, neither of which are out, Earth Defense Force, and Nobunaga's Ambition). On the other hand I have quite a few handheld games, simply because they are more to my liking now.

I prefer my DS, and 3DS games over the Switch. Until Nintendo say that they're coming out with a new handheld. I'll be playing my 3DS, and DS games. I'll still be playing my 3DS, and DS games even after they come out with a new handheld. The Switch so far has a crappy library. None are good games too me. I most likely won't buy it no time soon. Then it's way to expensive. Not worth $300.00 bucks right now. I rather put that money towards my bills. Did I mention that I hate putting my money on bills?

Kind of sad that the DS era is winding down. I enjoyed it immensely. So many great games to play and continue to play. I am excited for switch and see where they take it. Some day I'll get a switch I'm sure but I still have a lot of games to get from the ds/3DS era that I want to experience.

The final revision is a welcome addition and the last-minute port scramble (to ensure it really does get to 2019) were actually welcome surprises, and the bump of ATLUS RPGs ensures it dies gracefully.
The end of a console's life logically when its library is also the greatest. If you want a shiny new console with a tenth of the games, Nintendo's got a product for you.

It would b nice if Nintendo would release a few more 1st party games. I don't feel like the 3DS had a good lineup. To me it was like Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Animal Crossing New Leaf & virtually nothing else I want to play..not enough 3rd party or diversity.
Still, I love my 3DS. Couldn't have played Super Mario 3D Land, LM: Dark Moon or AC without it. And I LOVE the 3D effect.

I am honestly happy more and more focus is being put on the Switch by developers.
I do find the 3DS uncomfortable now and my eyes have deteriorated in the last 5 years. I think the 3DS is a fantastic device, I wish I could experience more of it's library, but form factor and screen resolution are just tough to deal with for me personally at this point. I have owned something like 60 3DS games though (maybe more, sold a few off over the last 2-3 years) so am definitely not complaining!

I'm sad that the 3ds is being slowly phased out - I love its portability and being able to curl up on the sofa with it. I love the street pass feature.
A home console attached to a TV I have to play in a spare bedroom, away from the family TV and furthest from the front door (& invariably the door bell goes when I'm playing on my own in the house). I have several 3ds units bought slowly over the years and one of the older ones has gone dead on me - think its the battery & ordered a new one to see if that solves the issue. I play all the units I have, tho not all on a daily basis. Its left a dilemma - if its not the battery do I go for a repair (which is £85 in the UK), can't buy a new one as no new 3ds, XL or otherwise, is being sold by the mainstream retailers here in the UK - I can get one from a smaller seller for around £210, err no, way too much. I can get a 2ds xl for £125, but I don't want to do that, I like the 3ds. So I sort of feel forced into waiting for games to come out on the Switch that I want to play - & Its only really animal crossing (tho I would love it if Viva Pinata came back as game). |
Here near the end, my only complaint is that we didn't get more games that are actually in 3D. That's been my only complaint since the beginning. I believe that every game released on this system should have been required to be made in full 3D (with 2D as an option). But that's just me. I'm a huge fan of 3D graphics in all forms and I will miss this console a lot. Not that I won't still be playing it, but you know what I mean.

I think the 3DS will get discontinued, the Switch hype will die down, people will realize that 70% of the Switch library are games that are much better on Xbox or PlayStation, and Microsoft will enter into the handheld market with the Microsoft XP (Xbox Pocket) and it’ll dominate the 9th gen handheld market. It’ll have graphics slightly better than the Vita, and it’ll feature a game library full of Xbox exclusives. It’ll also have its own version of virtual console, with original Xbox titles available for download.
It’ll have twin analog sticks and the rest of the regular controls, and it’ll feature an 8-hour battery life on medium settings. It’ll also be the first handheld console to introduce in-game graphics settings for all graphically-demanding titles, allowing users to boost battery life to up to 14 hours. Not only that, but it will have a docking mode (similar to the switch) that allows you to play games through your TV. Unlike Switch, it won’t claim to compete with full home consoles. It’ll just play it’s own titles in full HD. A major attraction to the system will be found with nostalgic gamers looking to relive their Xbox favorites in both full HD in docked mode, and in handheld mode on the go. It will be similar to how nostalgic NES and SNES players use the 3DS Virtual Console, only this will be able to play through a big screen.

Normally I wouldn't mind a console being discontinued, but it's pretty foolish to believe in a 3DS successor at this point. I love the 3DS and wish it would truly have a successor, but now I've given up hope and am dreading the 3DS' death day.
The Switch, while an okay console, is just that: a so-so home console. In the standard TV mode, it's a lot like the Wii, but the Joy-Con are so unresponsive compared to Wii Remotes. A lot of Switch games are actually Wii U games designed for two screens, especially apparent when you play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Captain Toad. As such, I would much rather play on my Wii or Wii U.
In handheld mode...well, it's clear that a lot of Switch games weren't designed for handheld mode. Mario Odyssey blocks off some moves unless you're playing on TV mode, and Smash Ultimate requires you to use TV mode to use GCN controllers. You get a touchscreen, but this touchscreen lacks the precision of other Nintendo touchscreens. So you can give up your Mario Maker Switch dreams, if you haven't already.
The game lineup is pretty lackluster, too. And if you have a lot of friends to play with, there aren't many games I can recommend. In my opinion, Mario Odyssey is the only Switch-exclusive title of true quality; others, like Kirby Star Allies and Mario + Rabbids, are good but not as great. But a lot of the best Switch games are also on and work better with Wii U.
Sorry, I didn't mean to bash on the Switch so much, but ultimately the whole portable console thing is a gimmick at best, and the Wii and Wii U have offered better gameplay on TV mode. In my opinion, the Switch is okay but not great; it's a "jack of all trades" but excels at none of them. This is why Nintendo needs to fix the unresponsive TV mode and make a true handheld to succeed the 3DS. But apparently they're blinded by sales charts, and so any improvements to the Switch or any more handhelds are all just pipe dreams.YoshiFlutterJump@YFJ
I feel a lot the same way as you, especially for games feeling like they were made for use on a TV with off TV play a secondary consideration. I don't have bad vision, but even I have trouble reading text on some games in handheld mode, and quite frankly I got a Switch for stuff like Kirby and Animal Crossing, but more specifically for the kinds of games like we got on the 3DS, the stuff like Return to Popolocrois, MocoMoco Friends, Dragon Ball Fusions, Etrian Odyssey, Fantasy Life, Bravely Default, Dragon Quest, Phoenix Wright, the River City series, Monster Hunter Stories.
I want that kind of stuff to make it to the Switch, but so far it hasn't. I'm hoping when the 3DS is shelved that those kinds of games make it to the Switch in a way uncompromised by the form factor of the device itself.
If those kinds of games don't make it to the Switch, I will have bought a system I will barely use. As it is, I have no interest in the PS4 and the four games on the system I might be interested in playing. I don't have fun with most modern AAA games, which is part of the reason I've gone with portable systems primarily the last two generations, buying home consoles only after the ends of their respective lifespans (my first PS3 in December 2016, my Wii U in March 2017, after a VERY rocky start with a luanch XBox360).
Of course the problem is that having to make all those games in HD now rather than the 240p resolution on the 3DS is absolutely going to drive up costs and companies may feel it's no longer profitable enough to put that kind of stuff out anymore.
We may be in an age where A and AA type games are no longer considered viable, leaving us with only Indies and AAA games on home cosoles (or even systems like the Switch).
I don't like those times.
Edit: I did rather enjoy Kirby as a couch co-op game for a group of people who aren't necessarily gamers, and Mario+Rabbids because I'm a fan of turn based strategy (and have never played any game with Ribbids before, so had no negative connotations about them). I didn't like what I played of Zelda, because, while it has some cool stuff like abusing the magnet to bring a rock or platform across the map to beat up monsters from a distance, the game felt way too big for what it was trying to do. I obviously didn't finish it, and that makes for it to be the second of the two 3D Zelda games I've tried and simply did not have much fun with.http://www.explosm.net/comics/657/
