The Switch needs a remodel in my opinion

  3. The Switch needs a remodel in my opinion
I was on the fence about purchasing a Switch which I finally did, only to return it the next day. I've owned every Nintendo console and most of their portable systems but the Wii U will most likely be my last and favorite. It practically plays every good Nintendo game since the NES. It's almost impossible for me to get rid of now anyway since I have over 100 digital games on it.

The Switch has so many great games already and a ton more on the way but in my opinion, the console sucks. I feel it should basically have been the same as the Wii U in every way except can be played anywhere. The Wiimotes are a much better controller then the Joycons which were so uncomfortable to use.

My biggest problem with the Switch is not being able to use the tablet as my controller for TV play. That and not being able to transfer all of my games over. I'm so angry that I'll never be able to play Super Mario Odyssey. Unless Nintendo comes out with a different version of the Switch.

The only issue I'm seeing here is that you're unable to comprehend what a Pro Controller is.
Use the joycon grip or get a pro controller.

I agree that it really needs a virtual console along with backwards compatibility.

VC seems to be a no-brainier, but from what I've seen with the details on the online subscription they're pushing, I have a feeling it will be included as that instead.

BC is a bit trickier to do given they're moving from discs to physical cards, but still, some kind of transfer from your Wii U to the Switch would've been awesome, at the very least for the digital games you bought. Unfortunately it seems like they're just porting over the same games with a bit more added to them (MK8 with all dlc, Pokken with extra characters), and charging us full price for them. I'm not really down for that; only reason I got MK8 was because I didn't own it, but I doubt that I'll do the same with Pokken, and I suspect many non-competitive players feel the same way.

I loved being able to use the Wii U game pad as my controller plus being able to use it as a TV remote. Plus being able to switch to using just the Game pad on the fly. A pro controller would not solve this problem.

A Pro controller also would not solve the problem of games like CoD being more fun when played with a Wii Remote and off TV co-op than with joycons or a Pro controller and split screen.

@PatrickSheehan, I understand. Wii U had me spoiled as well and that is probably why I will not end up getting rid of it. Playing with many control options and using off TV co-op multiplayer is something Switch cannot do and games like Hyrule Warriors (or my favorite, Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper) will suffer in my eyes as a downgrade and step backward from where Wii U was going. Wii U offered so much more versatility than Switch does at this point so i do understand where you are coming from.

However, if you look at Switch as a hand held, it becomes clear what the intention of the console is. The console is not about being a true Wii U successor; rather, it is more about merging the handheld into the home console experience like back when Playstation and Nintendo 64 were merging home consoles with arcade experiences. If you look at it as more of a 3DS replacement that can compliment your Wii U, then you may end up not disliking the console as much as you do right now.

The only FPS games I played that were more fun with the Wiimote were Metroid Prime 1 and 2 on the Trilogy. That's because they had a lock system that avoided you rotating the camera by accident when aiming at the corners. It was the most awesome FPS experience I've had on console imho. For CoD I had more fun using a mouse and keyboard on PC tbh, I did play it very early on Wii but I did not like how sensitive the camera would get with slight corner movements, although it may have been my settings too. Which other FPS games were you playing with Wiimote?

Should have played the Wii U versions the sensitivity problems are fixed and the Wii U version is far better for it. Hell, games like Conduit for Wii solved that problem. However, obviously mouse and keyboard is the best way to go but that is not the most practical way for home consoles (especially the way my home is set up) gamers to enjoy their games. Wii remote is a much superior option to joycons, in my opinion. Because of the lack of pointer controls, I have no interest in FPS games and on-rails shooters on Switch. The fact that Wii U had the option (which gave you and me our preferred console experience) and Switch does not means in the eyes of some (myself included), Switch is a step backward. Not to mention the off TV play which made 1v1 CoD amazing with no screen peeking or co-op online with no split screen and screen freedom.

Second'd. Who the hell wants the console to be their pad for TV Mode? Same with using Wiimotes, not the kind of shit I want to be using when I'm out and about with my Switch.

As for pointer controls, well like them if you want. I'm glad we're putting that behind us, motion controls of that kind are best left to VR inputs at this point. Heck I'm just glad Nintendo have their game together again, the Wii U is the one console I've never really enjoyed playing, just finicky as heck when I demo'd at games conventions or retail stores, and I wasn't going to pay for one just to see if I'd enjoy it better in my home.

As a note, I'm not shelling out for the pro controller for the Switch, I'm fine docking my controllers to the pad, the normal pad is great and I can still claw-grip easily.

Doesn't each joycon contain a gyroscope to let you aim? Would it be possible to just use one of them to aim? I have not played a shooting game on Switch yet (Splatoon 2 is coming on the mail soon for me), so I'm just wondering about this. I do have BotW but iirc you need to use both joycons to aim the bow, which felt awkward to me.

btw I'll give shooters a more fair chance on Wii U. Could've also been the fact that the Wiimotes did not have motion plus natively when I played it way back.

Seriously no one cares. No one cared about the WiiU which is why it suffered during its existence. The Switch has some issues but the duel screen gimmick is not one of them.

Firstly, splintering the install base is a bad idea. I don't like that Microsoft and Sony did it and they even made sure that there was software parity. The proposition you make would most definitely NOT have software parity, which makes it even worse

Secondly, there are 3 platforms out there for that kind of experience. We don't need a fourth

I'm talking for like 2 or 3 years time, I'm sure they will release a Nintendo Switch Mini or Nintendo Switch Micro before then, perhaps announce it late 2018 or early 2019. Would be perfect to replace Nintendo 3DS. 4 inch screen, much smaller bezel, smaller and more lightweight, better battery. I'd buy such a redesign for sure, a fully portable, pocket friendly Nintendo Switch mini edition.

I fully expect at least 2 revisions in the Switch's lifetime.

What I was referring to was the idea that those revisions should boost power... And they shouldn't.

At best, I see a Switch with more RAM(they've done kind of thing that before), but no actual power increase

Look I am not going to shoot you down or anything but this is really a classic case of Nintendo cannot please everyone. For me I love everything about its design. The portable joy-cons that can be used as individual mini controllers or clicked into its own little casing that you get with the Switch for more of a standard console controller feel. Also like someone did mention you can also just get a pro-controller. The screen is a great size, the console is not too bulky or too big. I am surprised it is actually not bigger to be honest. Nah I am happy :) but what ever makes you happy wo/man. go for it!
I love my Vita and my 3DS. I wish everyone can just play nicely and stop with the console wars :P

True, pointer controls are far superior and besides keyboard and mouse, they are the best way to play FPS games (I remember rthem being particularly good for Pikmin as well), but games like Splatoon still use motion controls and control quite well, so I think there's still something to be said about that

I love my Wii U, but there's no denying that the failure behind that system was the poor advertisement, and the Gamepad itself. The Switch has some flaws, but it's been a better marketing success in the first few months than the the Wii U did in its entire lifespan.

Honestly though, it's easier for me to enjoy shooters like Splatoon and Sin & Punishment Star Successor with motion controls.

The Switch would definitely be improved if it could be used, like the Wii U, as a dual-screen system. But other than that it's better than the Wii U in every way.

TC is certainly entitled to his own opinion, however, his reasoning behind the 'need for a redesign' is totally flawed. Not counting the Wii U, can anyone tell me which consoles allow their controller to be used as a TV remote? Anyone? As for the Wii Motes, they served their purpose, and now it's time to move on. TC can live in the past and enjoy his Wii U and the games he has for it, and everyone else can enjoy their Switch games. The world will go on.

1) Why does it matter how many other consoles offered using the controller as a television controller?

2) Wii remotes, specifically the use of pointer controls, would still be extremely practical today. Even more practical than motion controls. I wish we would move on from motion controls but keep the pointer controls. Mouse and keyboard predated dual analog and motion controls but nobody in their right mind would say its time to move on from that. I am not saying your opinion is wrong, just showing how your opinion can be just as outdated as the opinion you disagree with.

3) I can enjoy both and I encourage the topic creator do the same but that does not mean Switch is not lacking in some areas. This does not mean that from generation to generation, for any company, features get left behind that we all want to return (like backwards compatibility) and wish to have a reasonable discussion about it. I hope you behave in a more sensible manner than this in the future.
