Is this the same company that asked him to fix/optimize their game and then he went in and made a game go from "pretty unplayable" to "all right"? I forget the name of the game but it was prince or king something.

I forget the name of the game but it was prince or king something. It was more than just asking for help. They gave him the damn source code. That's unheard of to hand over the source code of a commercially available product to a non-employee to mess with to try to get working. Their porting guys had just hit a wall and couldn't get it to work better. Even Durante himself had issues since the code was like so much knotted dry spaghetti. Durante has made a name for himself fixing the janky ports of japanese games. Japanese developers are still learning how PCs work and over time they've gotten slowly better at it. But Durante's always there to fix the older stuff. Dude made the mod for the PC version of Dark Souls. He also got Tales of Symphonia to work better.

In this case Durante was actually contracted to work for XSeed. I'm not sure if the same thing happened last time.

He stopped fixing games because japanese devs would just release shitty broken turds and expect modders to fix their shit. Now what happened here is ideal, if you don't want to learn how to make proper PC games then you PAY the money to get a 3rd party to help you. Anyway, aren't XSeed ports generally ok?

They outsourced their last port too... Ys memories of celceta, though it only got ported to chinese officially. Wasnt the best port but its playable. The inability to really map the keyboard caused me to have to play with 2 keyboards side by side but it was worth it.

That was a really interesting blog post, thanks for sharing it.
Are the Trails in the Sky games a part of the same series as the Cold Steel games? Are all the Cold Steel games coming to the PC?
My log has something to tell you.

Are the Trails in the Sky games a part of the same series as the Cold Steel games? Liberl: Trails in the Sky Trails in the Sky SC Trails in the Sky The Third Crossbell: Trails to Zero Trails to Azure Erebonia: Trails of Cold Steel I Trails of Cold Steel II Trails of Cold Steel III ? Trails games take place in the same world but different areas, Sky in Liberl, Zero/Azure in Crossbell and Cold Steel in Erebonia. I think some of them happen at the same time across the separate Trails parts, but in the end, this is the recommended order and latter games can spoil the previous ones. Afaik, skipping games may lead to you being confused what happened in the future games?

And then the Crossbell character show up in Cold Steel, too (although for most people there is no choice in the matter since the Crossbell games aren't localized yet).
I will rule the world, and find that truly good cup of coffee.

wow this is just sad How so? With Durante's help we're now going to be getting one hell of a great port for a great game. I don't see the issue. Tyranius2 posted...
Exactly. Work getting outsourced during game development is far from unheard of. |

I guess it's more honorable to do everything themselves and put out a shit port Yeah, let's just do a crap job! That'll surely not make us look bad to people who don't care how shit gets done, only that shit gets done! It's better to ask for help, get it, and put out a superior product than to stubbornly try to do it yourself and fail.

I'm sure there is some logic here but I confess to having no idea what it is. The logic is almost like macho bullshit. "If you can't do it yourself, don't do it at all" or "better to try and fail than to get help and not fail because at least you tried on your own like a man!" Probably the same guys who would get lost and not ask for directions. "I've got a GPS but fuck it man, I know where I'm going."

So long as he was actually compensated for it, I don't see a problem. A lot of modern Japanese ports are outsourced, be it PC or console. Better to do that and establish your brands on PC then wait for development talent to become more familiar with Windows development at a snail's pace.
Dragon Nexus posted... He (Durante) also got Tales of Symphonia to work better. That was Kaldaien. Durante took five minutes to recreate the character outlines. |

I know he did his early stuff for free, which gained him a lot of fame in the gaming community, and that's why XSEED knew to contact him for help. https://www.wired.com/2013/11/deadly-premonition-pc-durante/ This article makes it sound like he was doing the game fixes as a hobby and didn't want to be paid.

No, because PS2 was garbage, and is the primary cause of the collapse of the Japanese game market in the mid 2000s. |
I'm sure they at least had Durante sign some sort of contract since they handed out the source code to him.

Hmm, could well be. Saw Kaldaien commenting a lot later...with the suspicion that Namco just outright took his fixes and uploaded them as a patch without giving him any credit.

Didn't Kaldaien have a mental breakdown shortly after all of that? Maybe. I understand not deliberately supporting pirated versions. But his attitude about it leaves much to be desired. Then again the Steam forums are toxic and lack an ignore feature.

Kal didn't mind Other Ocean (the port team, which had previous botched Ultra Street Fighter 4 PS4) reverse engineering his stuff in the abstract, it's just they could not have made it any more obvious that they actually did it: his Symphonia fix has an "MSAA Quality" setting that ended up never working, even on hardware explicitly designed to support- Symphonia's final patch added that setting- still forever broken- to the options menu.
Yeah, it was Nier that raised the brouhaha. His having some manner of problem with Github around the same time didn't help. |
