It's a subjective term isn't it?

I've heard most people imply graphics so they say games like FF7 is unplayable because it looks too ugly. Some say Golden Eyes because of controllers. Some say it's just old games that are unplayable compared to now. Some say it's just not fun as the first time.

What a dumbass term.

Well like Goldeneye. People played that when they were young and it was one of the first (if not the first) game to have multi-player like that. Try to play it now and it isn't as fun.

For me it means inefficient controls in relation to modern gaming. Golden Eye for instance aged badly in relation to modern FPS game. Various RPG's haven't aged as badly simply because those games are more heavily story driven and doesnt rely on real time mechanics to make the game smooth or fun

Goldeneye was released around the same time as Quake. Quake is still a hell of a lot of fun. Goldeneye's clunkiness isn't due to age.

That the faults in the game were not evident at the time because we weren't aware of them. You can only see them in retrospect because of future advances in games.
How quaint.
DevsBro 22 hours ago#19
Of course it's subjective. Lots of things are.

But it's not tied to any particular quality of the game. Just a general sense of a game that was awesome when it came out but is difficult or unpleasant to play today because of how advancements in the modern era.

For example, Mega Man Legends is a great game but every time I go back to replay it, it's like "wait, I have to strafe with the shoulder buttons?! Was this how I did it last time?"

It just means that while the gameplay and mechanics were acceptable, or even very good for it's time, when judged from today's standards they seem archaic and not so great.

Like say an old shooter released way back, where you aim with the left stick and holding two buttons. Was a great game, and everyone loved it. However if we looked at it today it would feel very awkward to play.

That's it.

In my opinion, it usually has to do with how graphics hold up compared to todays standards.

A game like Chrono Trigger holds up pretty well, because of it's art style, and the gameplay is still accessible today, and still actively sed (turn based combat).

A game like Golden Eye looks pretty ugly, because it's artstyle just looks a lot more "outdated", and/or the controls are too different to what we are used to today.

I thought

WOAH

this looks like REAL LIFE

today I look at it and think it looks nothing like real life and is blotchy and pixelated

it means people back in the day thought the game looked good and cutting edge

but people today see that it is not anymore

ex: compare a marvel legends action figure with a marvel figure from the 70s

in the 70s these were good figures

you could move the neck, the arms and the legs

in 2017 these are trash

Take RE4 for example. The game is easy and you can abuse the broken door/knife trick, head shot into a melee is OP, the shotgun is OP, grenades are OP, the knife is OP.. the game is fucking easy exploiting the mechanics so that to me means the game has aged terribly and does not play the same as you would the first time without knowing all those shit.

Yeah, controls is a big part of it, but really I think most of the first wave of 3D polygon games just look really ugly now. Doesn't mean they can't be fun but the graphics definitely "didn't age well," whereas I feel like a lot of NES and SNES era games still look pretty good because sprites just age better than 3D models.

Due to bias, it’s hard for me to use that phrase for games I enjoyed as a kid. Could a 10 year old enjoy Banjo Kazooie today? I can think of reasons why they wouldn’t, but it’s not an easy admission for me.

It’s much easier for me to use that phrase when I am underwhelmed by a popular old game that I had very limited experience with when it came out. Sonic Adventure is an example of that. I didn’t enjoy playing it for the 1st time in 2010, but I probably would have liked it in 1999.

I mean, in a way you're right...but the 80s didn't really have limited audio. All kinds of music was generated, and it sounded good. Hell, quality recordings of music have been around for a very long time.

A better comparison would be music recorded way back when microphones and recording stuff were primitive and could hardly accomplish the task they were supposed to do. I'll bet people went crazy over the first recorded music. But 20 years later shit improved a lot and you could actually have a cleaner, more well-rounded sound. Going back and listening to the first music record ever was probably a shitty experience for those people. They were like "whoa, I used to listen to this? I can hardly even hear anything, and there's so much ear piercing noise."

Sound familiar? It's what happens when people go back and play Goldeneye. You can't see shit, we're used to way different controls for FPS games, and the hit registry is way too slow...I swear I'll spray like 10 bullets into a guy with the AK and only 2 of them will register. The game would also slow down if too many enemies were on your screen. That'd be like listening to music that just unexpectedly started slowing down because the recording equipment was so terrible back then...it's like why even listen to the music at all since it's pretty much broken? Exactly. And the only reason you listened to it back then was because it was all there was.

Music from the 1980s (and way earlier) isn't broken. Goldeneye is. But Goldeneye was really all people had for FPS games on console, so for many people that was their first FPS. That's why it was profitable to make the game, and why it was popular and fun. But the N64 didn't really have the hardware to hit all the essentials of any FPS game.
    God bless you

It's a personal thing for sure. For some people all older games aren't as fun.

For me I struggle with games that play similarly to modern games (like an FPS or third person shooter) but have a dated control scheme, But if you really wanted to buckle down and get used to it you'd probably be fine.

I can handle games like Resident Evil because there's nothing that really plays like it today. So it doesn't feel like I'm having to revert my brain to something worse.

Then you have games that have aged well outside of the visuals and maybe the odd quirk.

But I'm also someone who was raised in the 90's. So my tolerance is a lot higher.
    Kind Regards,

To me it usually has to do with graphics. Sometimes it has to do with gameplay too.

Look at Final Fantasy 7. The game was considered beautiful when it was first released. Now it looks worse than vomit covered dog shit. Whereas there is still an appreciation for the graphics in a game like Chrono Trigger, because it's 2D. It's simple, and it looks good for what it is, even today.

For me, it's not graphics. But what it implies is that the game no longer feels fresh or innovative because what it tried to do during its time has been done to death so much that it's no longer fun anymore. A great example is the first Assassin's Creed, a game that has aged terribly. All GTA games also age terribly. I couldn't go back to GTA 5 after finishing it for the first time and it was surprising to me because I enjoyed the game so much and it was one of my favourites at that time.

Games that have aged well are all the MGS games, because they are all so unique. Even MGS1 despite the graphics is still very enjoyable. Other examples are Uncharted 2, Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption - these games are timeless.
I get what it means, but I can't think of any that I would personally consider to have aged badly. But that might be because I don't often replay games.
