It's already approaching the longest lifespan of any console ever, and there are fanboys who want Nintendo to continue milking this ancient system? Even if you bought this thing for $250 at launch, isn't 7 years enough time to get your money's worth out of it?

The Famicom in Japan was supported for 20 years

The Playstation 2 was supported for 16 years

The Nintendo DS Was supported for 11 years (and IIRC is still supported for repairs)

The Wii was supported for 10 years

The Gameboy was supported for 14 years.

The 3DS is not even half as old as how lost most of these systems were supported.

I don't now about the other systems, but once PS 3 came out, weren't most of the games released for PS 2 just shovelwares?

Just because a previous gen system continues to be sold in stores, supported for repairs, or got some miscellaneous shovelware & last gen ports released on it, doesn't mean you should include those years.

The Wii's support effectively ended when Wii U was released. When Nintendo has officially released a successor & has diverted all of their first party attention to it, that's when I end date it.

The 3DS fanboys are asking Nintendo to continue expending development resources on making high-budget first party titles for a 7 year old system, instead of moving onto the Switch which is already in a drought after 6 months. There's a big difference here.

When people talk support they are talking about games(that aren't shovelware) not whether it was still on shelves or not.

Might as well continue to support it if there isnt another handheld to replace it. If Nintendo seriously expects everyone to migrate to he switch they got another thing comming... And its not more money.

Being a douche isn't helping matters. The system isn't 7 yet. Besides the PS2 and more recently the PS3 got games after a successor. I suggest not caring that some aren't interested in moving on to the Switch instead of trying to piss them off by being a Switch fanboy and/or 3DS hater.

The Switch is the successor. GameFreak has already confirmed the next mainline Pokemon is coming to Switch. There isn't going to be another 3DS successor. The Switch is that successor, and it's also a home console. I don't understand why you people are so resistant. The Switch is literally light years ahead of the 3DS in terms of everything. It's already getting the sort of 3rd party support 3DS never got. It's also going to get the 3DS "handheld" games, and it's going to get Nintendo's home console games. In addition, it will also get many third party major games...

The ability to play Xbox One level games, or near it anyway, in the Switch's form factor more than justifies the price.

Do you have any evidence / sources to support your claim that Nintendo Switch = 3DS successor and that the Switch is going to get the 3DS "handheld games"? I have not seen any announcement from Nintendo claiming this, nor any reputable sources.

Personally I don't see any reason to get on the Switch bandwagon [yet], 3ds has a great library and I don't see how the Switch is setting up itself up to be successor with the lack of software support atm.

The next mainline Pokemon game is really all you need. That's going to come, and when it does, Switch is going to all a whole s***load more consoles.

The idea that the Switch isn't eventually going to outright replace the 3DS, or that development isn't going to be further and further diverted to Switch as the adoption rate grows is nuts. 3DS is nearing, for all intents and purposes, what most people would consider to be the end of its cycle. It's got a few more big releases coming, so it's not there yet, but it's almost there.

That's good enough for me, my only concern is what's going to happen to all those developers who have been making games solely for the 3DS, a.k.a developers who make games to be played on a small, portable device only? Does Switch force these developers to make "console games", or is Switch going to be something like a "3DS with a bigger screen" for portable games"? Might be a dumb question but I'm not sure about how the merging of "portable" and "console" is going to work without losing the things that made the 3DS unique / great.

A better question would be, why people want a system to die so bad?

A console/handheld out of the picture doesn't necessarily mean more games for the current ones, if that's the reason.

It really isn't. If you lose your Switch all your data is gone, which is far from the case on 3DS as even if you mostly digital, you can back up certain games onto the SD Card and then make a backup of the SD Card into your computer and re download the games for free and restore the data if your 3DS gets lost. It's even less of an issue if you go mostly physical.

you act like the 3ds data isn't tied to the console...which it is.

I'm pretty certain the same applies to the Switch, outside of saved games. But the same s*** can happen to your 3DS saved games too.

so if you do lose your 3ds you are still SOL. Streetpass data is gone...ain't no recovering that.

The way that the Switch handles saves Is better. The fact that Nintendo doesn't allow you to copy saves yet is not. Again some 3DS games save to the system not the cart. I have had to start over on FL like 3 times now because of this.

How I see myself able to carry my 3DS:
- In my pocket
- In a Case
- In a bag
How I see myself carry a Switch
- In a case in a bag.

Why? I held a Switch and it feels lighter/more vurnable as a New 3DS XL or even a N2DS XL. The screen is unprotected and isn't scratch free and can't be covered at any time. The hub is great, but doesn't close well so the switch still takes dust on the screen.

This is the major difference between the switch and 3DS for me, I am afraid if I take the switch on the road it will break. That's why I don't even consider the Switch being a handheld, but a console that you can take to take a dump (promotion for a vita using cross-play with the PS3/PS4)
I am the first one who claims that the next 2D Metroid game will be "Metroid Dread".

Final Fantasy XI got several expansions for PS2 after the release of the PS3, the last one being in the first half of 2013. Guilty Gear also got a few revisions, with Slash, Accent Core, and Accent Core Plus coming out after the PS3. Lots of games continued to come out in Japan for it. DOkapon Kingdom was also out around 2010, and I wouldn't call that shovelware.

In some cases it is both, like Super Mario Maker, which forces you to wipe the save on the cartridge if using it on another console.

I mean, I would think that having dozens and dozens of 3DS hardware variations produced would put more of a dent in the price than it has.
