- Remember when text size in video games was huge? And you know actually readable?

Look at how huge that text is. On a tv screen I could read it from like 40 meters away. Now let's look at a game from the quote unquote HD gen JFC. Just look at that. A huge screen, On a 60+ inch tv, and the text is literally squished and placed at the bottom. Barely readable from a meager 4 meter distance, since it's important to maintain a safe distance away from the tv instead of having your eyes glued to a screen just inches away. All that space, and they couldn't have the text maybe match up with the widescreen display? |
that text in IoG is pretty f***ing huge though.
but yeah I know what you mean. I always turn text size up when I have the option and majority of games are unplayable to me (if they involve text) if I don't wear glasses ;( I have a 50" TV too x_x |
While admittedly that is pretty small, is that a voice acted game? If it is, I can forgive and understand why they didn't have the text take up half the screen.

I bought mine in 2010 because Lost Odyssey was too small

For whatever reason, when games became HD, everyone (ESPECIALLY WESTERN DEVS) forget how to scale UIs, and it's been like that ever since.
Some text is too small, even on my large 55" HDTV sometimes. It's like console developers design their games for PC gamers/monitors.

Yeah, it's pretty awful these days. I feel bad for any deaf gamers who don't play exclusively on the PC.

I actually played red dead on my very low quality and small TV and I could still perfectly read the subtitles and text. Red dead doesn't really have small text. A game that has a really, really, REALLY, small text is "Tropico 3". I went to the tutorial section to learn how to play and what are the mechanics and the structure of the game, and well.....I tried as hard as I could, I even brought my face close to the TV....and I still couldn't read a damn word. And worst of all, the text does have voice over....but it's in a crappy Brazilian/Mexican accent, and I couldn't understand a damn word. How can anyone possibly understand how to play that game?
The text of the item description of dark souls games is also pretty small (and by that I mean way smaller than RDR), but unlike Tropico 3, it's still readable and there were only a few words that I couldn't properly read and had to bring myself close to the TV. No game that I have played has had text as annoyingly small as Tropico 3. F*** that game and whoever thought it was good idea to make the text so small and put a terrible voice acting on it. The letters and documents in Resident evil revelations, gears of War, and other games that have letters in them, and the historical figures and locations profile of Assassin's creed games also have a small text (though still readable, but it's annoying to read them because of how small they are). Overall, I don't have a problem with the text size of the subtitles, my problem is with the text size of item descriptions, character profiles, and basically, optional stuff that add some more story and tell you more about the game and it's world. At least some games add (understandable) voice over to them, like Bioshock (the audio logs), or batman arkham asylum (the tapes).

As a legally blind person 90% of the text in modern games is unreadable to me
I couldn't read a single dialog bubble form NPCs in Star Ocean despite having the best possible glasses for my condition, a big enough TV and sitting close to it, my eyes are just not good enough. I couldn't read a single line of in-game text in FF15 either, tho zooming in during the menus thanks to PS4's built in zoom function made a world of difference for me

Another upcoming game that has this issue is Blue Reflection
I was going to pre order it but now I'm not sure sure, the game is sub only and the subs are very small for me, yet I can read subbed anime just fine but sub anime groups know what they're doing and make the text a fine, sufficient size

True story: Not being able to read text in Horizon is how I knew it was time for me to get glasses. Is the text important? This will determine my purchase of the game because even with my glasses I won't be able to read it.

Final fantasy 14 is really bad at tis too. The text you CAN upscale is useless. You cant read anything from npc characters

It's f***ing ridiculous how all games have tiny text ever since gaming went HD years ago. A few years ago I sincerely thought I needed glasses because I struggled so much with reading text in every game I was playing even though I wasn't sitting unreasonably far from my TV. I go to the ophthalmologist and he tells me my vision is 20/20, then I notice I don't have trouble seeing/reading anything other than modern video game text. It's inexcusable.

You need an HD tv for HD gaming systems. Otherwise you are eventually screwed when it comes to reading important text. This is about text being small on HDTVs. Another good example: GTA V. Not just text, either. A lot of it's HUD elements in general are ultra tiny and seemingly designed with the idea of you either having a huge TV or sitting ~3 feet from it.

I've been saying this for the past 10 years but have been written off and trolled time and time again despite my being right. So glad to see others have noticed it too. |

^ ^ Agreed. I myself had a 56incher back in gen 7 and would constantly wave my hands in exasperation at the tiny font. It was especially trying in a game like Assassin's Creed, a particular bizarre example of a game with a huge database and lore, yet no option to increase the text size, if they weren't gonna make the default any bigger (and it was deplorably minuscule)

I actually noticed it in GTA 4, although I simply disliked what they did with everything there, like making health and armor these tiny barely visible borders around the already small HUD minimap display, instead of the clearly visible health icons of the ps2 gta games. I don't even mind not having a numerical value for health, just a visible health bar and armor bar. |

I play games muted alot. Also, i can read way faster than hearing. I also dont miss small details. I also fully support voice acting, but having readable subs is nice.
