Is 3DS really being replaced by Switch?

  3. Is 3DS really being replaced by Switch?

I have seen a lot of talk about Nintendo's history of saying they are not replacing their current console for the new one but what they say and what actually happens is the opposite. Do any of you feel like 3DS is losing it's steam and the emphasis is only on Switch now? I was considering getting a 3DS but if this is true then I won't even bother getting a 3DS since I already have a Switch.

why wouldn't you still get a 3DS? It has a great backlog. The best thing is having options. having both is great.

3DS support is winding down, that much is apparent.

Well I like to play a lot of multiplayer games and if nobody plays anymore there's not much of a reason for me to get one when everyone is going to be playing on Switch instead.

Kinda. Nintendo is feeling things out.
Mods are pathetic SJWs who abuse their administrative abilities and couldn't muster a logical defense for their actions to save their lives. Worthless.

that won't be for a while. Switch is selling well, but they're still in short supply.

Meanwhile 3DS is still pretty active, especially when US/UM come out. The Switch pokemon game is at the earliest a year away.

3DS's backlog is literally YEARS in game time.
Jair 1 day ago#8
The 3DS will be viable for at least another year or two as far as I see it.... if you have some specific games you've had an eye on, you can check around message boards to see how active the community is and make a decision based on that.

3DS development has begun winding down, sure, and Switch development is gearing up, but it will take a little time for both to really make an impact.
juzzieb 1 day ago#9
It doesn't feel like its slowing down at all. 3DS has never been a system that pumps out tonnes of releases every month. You usually have to wait a little in between games but quality releases are still being pumped out as fast as ever. Samus returns, pokemon and EO V are right around the corner. That's a better list of games than what is coming to switch any time soon.

Why are 3DS owners so against the Switch replacing the 3DS? Aren't you happy that the 3DS is getting replaced by a system with better specs? With the 3DS out of the picture Nintendo and third party devs can focus on the Switch so more quality games.
The Switch doesn't really feel like a legitimate successor to the 3DS even if that's their intention. Handheld mode is really a lot more cumbersome than it should be and it negatively impacts game performance to the point where it's so much better to just play it docked.
DoobleBoop 1 day ago#12
Is there a possibility that 3DS games would get Switch support through the E-Shop?
If so then there really isn't a good reason for me to get a 3DS.

Didn't the Wii U also support Wii and Gamecube games as well?
I never used my Wii U much but I did play a couple of Wii games on it and the few worthwhile Wii U exclusives.

PS4 Pro
Switch
Well, let's take a look. Nintendo's stopped putting out updates and games for the WiiU, nothing for it in 2017 apart from Zelda, porting its games to the Switch, and not releasing multiplats like FE Warriors on it. What does all of this suggest?

Obviously, that the Switch is replacing the 3DS! Just keep repeating that and eventually it'll become reality. Because the best part about owning a 3DS is complaining about it being dead.

Kind of. I mean it still has some great games coming out. Then again what are the chances of Nintendo totally dropping a portable system altogether?

I'm sure eventually (after the Switch) another handheld will come out. Doesn't Japan prefer handheld games over consoles? More people are playing games on their phones 2. Nintendo might just be testing sales.

Nintendo likes their gimmicks and can't stick to a normal console since the Nintendo Wii so idk lol.

you expect them to say stop supporting the 3ds and buy a switch instead?

because the switch simply doesn't feel like a portable enough to replace the 3ds/ds line. Its neat and all, but its simply too bulky to actually be a portable that you take on the go... I'd feel like a huge dork carrying around the switch if I'm being honest, while the 3ds is only slightly bigger than my cellphone *shrug*

Nice try but I am not a fanboy to any company. I call out Sony on the overpriced memory card bulls***, the stupid paid online, and poor build quality of their PS4 controllers with broken triggers and peeling analog sticks.

I like Playstation for RPGs but lately they have been really bad and I am looking for other stuff to play which is why I got a Switch.

Microsoft is guilty of stuff too like RRoD and so is Nintendo with their piss poor voice chat support.

I just don't want to buy into something if what I already have will eventually be capable of playing 3DS games.

Nintendo themselves didn't show any sign of closing support for the 3DS
...That was true until they announced the closure of Miiverse
That was the first Nintendo sign for the 3DS starting to die
Then you have some 3rd party companies saying they won't support the 3ds anymore

Not to mention how expensive it is... IDK. Maybe it's just me but I think nothing of bringing my 3DS everywhere but I'd try to be overly careful with my Switch. Maybe it's because I think of it as a home console.

You can't exactly slip it into your pocket, nor would you want to with that exposed screen. To carry the Switch around a carrying case and a bag are basically required.

Dude I've held a switch in my hands I don't need to own one to know that it isn't very portable. The switch is basically a really slim tablet, whens the last time you carried around a tablet in your front or back pocket?? Sure the switch is portable to a degree but no where near as effecient as the 3Ds.

People said the 3DSXL was too bulky as it is, and even without the attachments the Switch is still a bit bigger both ways.

Considering they put out a new 2DS fairly recently? No, but we all know the DS line won't stick around forever. It'll be onto the next handheld, whatever that may be. Handhelds make Ninty a lot of money.

Considering the New 2DS XL, 2017 revision of a 2011 system, sold like 2 millions units in Japan alone, yeah, replacing the 3DS family with the Switch within the next 2 years would be incredibly stupid.

(Edit: Let's not forget that pokemon SuMo also caused a massive shortage of 3DS in NA that lasted at least 4 months)

Is the 3DS going out? Yes. But not before 2019 at the earliest.

All 3DS development will eventually move to Switch, but as others have said, it will be at least another yr or two before that happens;

2DS/3DS is still selling & has a user base of nearly 65 million. Switch has maybe 6 million+ right now.

So the 3DS still has plenty of life left & if you don't have one it's definitely worth getting; N3DS gives you DS, 3DS, VC (including SNES) & indie games - an excellent variety of games.

Well, the latest installment of Dragon Quest on 3ds out sold the PS4 version, the Switch version won't be able to approach the 3ds sales for awhile simply because Nintendo isn't meeting the demand in Japan.

The Switch is not portable, it has design issues, the batteries in both the controllers and console unit cannot be easily replaced without damaging the plastic. I can see an improved hardware revision in another year or two, but its not likely at all to see a "mini" Switch.

Is there a possibility of a successor to the 3ds? I don't know, but it would be foolish for Nintendo to abandon a market that has been good to them even during a time when smartphones have been everywhere.
Nope, the Switch replaced the Wii U.

The Swtich is what the Wii U should have been.

Not everyone has a Switch. 3ds owners know that the 3ds is going to lose support in a couple of years, even if they're upset about it. As far as I'm concerned, I've seen more people complaining whenever the 3ds gets a new game this year because they think Nintendo isn't making enough games for them when the Switch is getting plenty in the future, like come on it's just 6 months old.
