- So did Soul Calibur V kill the franchise?
Did the crap story, crap new characters, and crap limited content screw the continuity too much or is there just no demand?
The loss of Sophitia(fighting games greatest MILF) was especially jarring.

Man SCV was just awful. I know long time fans of the series was extremely disappointed. Maybe they'll learn from their mistakes and reboot the series again. I would love to see a new Soul Calibur done right.

Good gravy I hope so. Hope it's either a reboot or they retcon V's story harder than a comic book storyline.

knightimex posted... This. Also hoping for a remaster collection like .Hack got. SC V's overall story was a mess, and the story mode was just laughably bad. Barely any content compared to previous Soul Calibur games. As for gameplay I leave the debate to those who can understand the games inner workings. I just felt that the Soul Calibur franchise was fun and worked without the metered gameplay, so trying to include power meters to the degree that SC V did was needless.
Waiting for: (3DS) Culdcept Revolt, Metroid: Samus Returns / (PS4) Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

Great gameplay, worst roster in the series. Missing some fan favorites. They could have done without Ezio too. This and... ... Soul Calibur V was still better than any fighter we got this gen. Soul Calibur V and Dead or Alive 5 > 8th gen fighter

knightimex posted...Did Street Fighter 1 kill the franchise? @kenshiki Common sense can easily solve this. Sf1 was god awful. They still made another street fighter game. Mortal Kombat 4 5 6, and 7 were all super s*** games yet MK 8 9 and X exist. Final Fantasy 8 is one of the worse games in the ff franchise, that didn't stop ff9 from happening. Let alone ff13. Oh look FF15. Trust me, doesn't take a rocket scientists to figure out that SC5 won't be killing off anything.

Oh no Soul Caliber killed the franchise
I don't remember the might Soul Edge the game that predated Soul Caliber relying on guest characters and nonsense to make sales. They ditched the breakable weapons and thus doomed the future games to come. Soul Caliber sells on Link, Dark Vader, Spawn, Kratos, ect...

You lost all sense when you said Final Fantasy 8 is one of the worst games in the FF franchise, its one of the best actually its just the mechanics people didn't like and they didn't understand the main charcters emotions, 7 was worse but still a ok game, 1 and 2 maybe even 3 were worse but still ok games, 10 was far worse as it was a linear bore, 13 was far worse. MK4-7 were not bad games they were just average games, 9 was ok at best 10 is just generic. Only Street Fighter was a bad game and it was around at a time when there wasn't much competition.

Even Koei-Tecmo sorta disregarded IV's ending & V with them more or less kind of retconning Sophitia's death so that she ended up in Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate's amalgamated world instead.

I felt like SC3 took everything I learned over the years for SC2 and made me relearn (like how Jim from Tekken unlearned his original style). That, then, kinda kept me away from SC4 and SC5 (although I did buy both).
The change in cast wasn't a factor for me, considering I loved the Street Fighter III series of games. I just didn't feel like learning SC all over again. The transition to online play also killed it for me. BlueSnow posted... mistergrownman posted...Great gameplay, worst roster in the series. Missing some fan favorites. SCV has great gameplay, but everything else about the game sucks. I wonder who's smart idea was it to remove more than half of the cast and replace them with characters that have no bios, arcade endings and little time in story mode. The game was a disaster and set SC back like 10 years.

Not even close to one of the worst games. FFVIII s***s all over FFXIII and FFXV. It's disrespectful to even compare FFVIII to those games.

4 almost killed the franchise. sc5 was made by a small team with a limited budget as a result. IIRC SC5 sold much better than they ever expected.

Garbage story and neutered roster really hurt Soul Calibur 5. To this day I'll never understand the logic behind removing Setsuka, Zasalamel, and Talim. They took out three good original characters and replaced them with some mediocre mimics.

SoulCalibur suffers from several problems. SCV was one of them but another was franchise fatigue. The series just wasn't ever as popular as the major fighting games and wasn't capable of sustaining the kind of release frequency that Namco appeared to want. For a while it seemed like they wanted to alternate between Tekken and SoulCalibur.
With the high cost of modern games there's probably just enough of a market for one weapons-based traditional fighting game each generation, and last generation, SoulCalibur IV was that game, which meant that SCV didn't interest many people. It didn't help that the game's release timing and marketing were poor. It also didn't help that Namco followed it up with the idiotic mess that was Lost Swords, a free-to-play single-player game that tried to monetise character customisation. Fewer people downloaded a free SoulCalibur game in 18 months than bought SCIV in 8 months. The franchise almost certainly isn't dead. If there is a market for one weapons-based fighter per generation, then SCVI could still be that game. Bandai Namco just have to be clever about it. finalfantasy94 posted... if they rebooted it the name would be soulblade or souledge depending the region. The name change from Soul Edge to Soul Blade wasn't because of the region, it was because of Timothy Langdell's s***ty over-defensiveness about his former ownership of a trademark on the use of the word "Edge" in relation to games. That trademark has now been killed so Bandai Namco would be free to call the game Soul Edge worldwide if they wanted to (as they did previously, with the arcade version of the game being called Soul Edge globally). knightimex posted... Common sense can easily solve this. This argument of yours is nonsensical. The reason that the original Street Fighter (and the MK games before MK8) didn't kill those franchises were because those games were successful. Street Fighter was an enormous success after the arcade machine was revised to use six buttons - a sequel was guaranteed. The various Mortal Kombat games before 8 also sold very well - Deadly Alliance, for example, sold 3.5m. The problem with SCV, in terms of the future of the franchise, isn't that it was a poor game. It was that it sold poorly compared to previous games - poorly enough that Bandai Namco tried to recoup some money by making a free-to-play version that also failed. It might not have killed the series but it probably means that if and when SCVI appears, it'll be a make-or-break game. |

the only way I'll be excited for any potential SCVI is if it retcons SCV out of existence. It should probably go further and retcon everything after II. I think that's the last point where anyone other than big SoulCalibur fans had any real understanding of the storyline. They could also just reboot it and give themselves a clean slate from which to start again. |
