https://venturebeat.com/2017/08/02/grand-theft-online-just-had-its-best-money-making-quarter-ever/
Grand Theft Auto V has been out for almost four years, but its online component is still Take-Two‘s big money-maker. In fact, Grand Theft Auto Online just had its best quarter yet. God damn

.... how? They've added more f2p features (paywalls, waiting times that can be skipped with cash) with every update |
You know, I wouldn't even be that upset if GTA Online wasn't so lazy and fucking boring.
Who cares if the updates are "free" when all it adds are more overpowered vehicles and the same exact unbalanced PVP missions? I feel like I'm a pretty hardcore GTA fan and I just can't stomach the game anymore. It's just not fun |
Thanks for ensuring all their future games turn into cash grabs existing solely to sell game money @Every sucker that ever bought a shark card
|
What kills me is when people defend it.
They usually say it's how everything stays "free" (it isn't) and that it would split the player base if they did it any other way (Payday 2 proves that's not true at all) Quite honestly, I would rather pay for DLC expansions than go with the microtransaction nonsense. As is you have to pay around 50 bucks or grind the most boring shit forever just to get access to the basics. |

.... how? The cost of new stuff in game has inflated insanely since it came out but payouts for stuff haven't really gone up. And they've recently even gotten to a point where if you want to but [expensive thing] you also need to buy [expensive thing] first so you can't even split things between friends the same as you could before anyone. And spending $20 only gets you 1.25m iirc which is nothing in GTA now, at launch it was enough to get the best car in the game and have some money to spare, now it's not even half of the cost of the fastest car and it's a fraction of the cost of other cool stuff like the Knight Rider car. If you actually want to buy all if it and not spend literally hundreds of hours grinding, you pretty much don't have an option but to drop the $80 or whatever on the 8.5m shark card and there's tons of impulsive kid who wants everything right then, and older people who don't have the time to grind for that long and just like playing for an hour or two with some friends after a long busy day.

It's sad. There's a system that will get you about a million dollars every two and a half hours, but it's the most mind numbingly boring two and a half hours you're going to play and god help you if you fuck up just one tiny bit of it or someone decides to just jump in a fighter jet or rocket cycle with missiles and fuck your session up.

Every mission is basically go across map, pick up thing, go back across map. The system I was taught is basically this. 1. Buy supplies for Bunker 2. Buy supplies for coke warehouse (or whatever most expensive warehouse you have) 3. Do Headhunter 3. Steal Car for warehouse (beforehand fill warehouse with low and mid range cars so you ONLY get high end cars) 4. Sell car 5. During 20 minute cooldown, do headhunter and steal another car. Do this until you reach 600k 6. Sell weapons 7. Sell drugs Then you come out with a little over 1,000,000. 700k of which is profit. The problem is that it is the most boring shit ever and high risk if you don't lag yourself into a solo public session.

And you know what Take Two themselves reaction to this was? It's NOT enough in fact their CEO claimed they're "under monetizing " their userbase. This just shows the levels of insatiable avarice infecting publishers, no amount is ever enough. That even though they made literally billions of a single game release they want even more. |

Why does nobody here seem understand the difference between publishers and developers?
Rockstar themselves probably saw not a single penny from the GTA Online's microtransactions all of that went straight to the pockets of the executives at their parent company and publisher Take Two Interactive
Rockstar is full of passionate developers who want nothing more than to make amazing games for people to enjoy but they're permanently enthralled to their corporate overlords at Take Two and have to do everything told by them.

This, R* is more pro consumer than most devs. They've fought Take Two many times when they crack down on mods and they probably don't get much of a cut from Take Two's greedy shark card money. Twenty million starving and writhing in painIt's sad seeing Rockstar going down this path. Microtransactions were supposed to be something they made fun of, not fall victim to themselves.
I never thought I'd see the day where I WASN'T shitting my pants at the thought of a new Rockstar game. I wonder if the lackluster single player mode is connected to microtransactions. I mean, there's nothing much to do after the story, fewer story missions (especially if you take out heist setups), and almost none of the missions reward you (which was my biggest gripe). None of these are problems in Online.
If RDR2 is more of the same, I'm done with Rockstar. If they fail, then Ubisoft is there to pick up most of the slack. Yeah, they're flawed and they'll never measure up to Rockstar at its prime, but they regularly make decent-quality single player sandboxes, are listening to criticism, and their microtransactions usually give permanent items.Number of fellow Poets of the Fall fans: 24
