It's something that it's bothering me for a while, what happened to genesis market on ebay?

The prices are just insane, even very common games that a few years back were just $10 now easily surpass $60 or even $100.

Is there a reason for all this speculation?

A lot of collectors appear to have moved on from the NES/SNES to the Genesis, driving up prices in the process.

Fortunately, it is easy to play many first-party Genesis titles for quite cheap, through Steam and compilations like Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

I see, so basically the same people who ruined the nes-snes retrogaming market are now ruining the genesis, great!

Is there an alternative to the scam these collectors do on ebay? Maybe some other sites/communities with fair prices etc?

I noticed the Genesis game prices began creeping up at the local mom & pop game store almost three years ago... and save for the most common and undesirable titles, the prices have stayed up. It was inevitable that this was going to happen though. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the formal end of production for Genesis systems and games. Hard to fathom that was nineteen years ago!

And mind, I've been a party to witnessing this trend happen three console generations now. But for many years after the end of the Genesis you couldn't go to a thrift store without finding at least a game or controller. This sort of overlapped how in the mid-to-late '90s it was rare not to find Atari, Coleco, or other '70s & 80's console paraphernalia at thrift stores, flea markets, and yard/garage sale.

So many people are now engaged in video game collecting, and also video game flipping & profiteering that finding games in the used market venues has itself become a rather difficult challenge. I go yard/garage/estate sale'ing virtually every weekend, and can attest that there exist gaming specific dealers who will buy everything and anything video gaming related they can get their hands on, provided the price is right. As a collector, I only buy what I personally want for my own collection and will leave the rest for someone else to potentially find themselves some treasure. But the dealers practice the USMC principal and leave nothing behind.

What I'm getting at is the market demand for the Genesis and is' games is strong, but the supply has been sopped up creating a idealistic sellers' market.

Nope. The market is changing and the prices are going up with it.

I think you mean "escalation."

You know what happened? The Super Retro Trio, Retron 5, Retro Freak and endless Genesis Clone systems happened. The Genesis is no longer some forgotten thing from the 90s that people can just pick up a compilation disc to play anymore. It got caught up in the current retro wave, which is now the retro HD wave, and people want to play the old games again on their shiny HDTVs televisions.
Owner of NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, SMS, GEN, TG16, PSX, PS2, PS3, XBOX, X360, XB1, GB, GBC, GBA SP, GB Micro, DS, DS Lite, PSP and a lot of crappy games.

There are at least repros of some pricey games lately. I dunno about Genesis ones but I recently snagged a fully functioning repro of EarthBound for $30 and there's no real flaws so far.

Screw the hoarders and richbabies, I'm all for the clones and bootlegs if it means us working types can afford to play the great titles on original hardware finally.

Flash carts have existed for a while.

We're not all hoarders and richbabies. Some of us simply enjoy the original hardware because we appreciate these games and experiencing them the way others did when they were first released. Most of us here are also gamers so we play the stuff we own.

People who loved the games as kids can now afford to buy any game they want as an adult. Many people loved the Genesis back then. It makes perfect sense.

Yes it makes sense, but I find it strange (to not say stupid) to pay a lot more just because now people can afford it.

Supply and demand. Not that I'm condoning someone charging 50 bucks for, say, Castle of Illusion, but it's unfortunately the way it goes when a group of people want product that's not being produced anymore.
