“At a Nintendo demo event, a Nintendo representative led me through its two control schemes: touch screen with the Switch undocked and most notably its Joy Con-enabled controls, which allow for another player to hop in for co-op (local only, though). A few days ago, a Korean listing for The World Ends With You: Final Mix elicited some conversation due to its omission of Pro controller support. I asked a Nintendo representative if a traditional control scheme with a Pro controller will be supported, to which they confirmed won't be possible. It's solo Joy Con with motion reticle aiming and touch screen or bust."The World Ends With You: Final Remix on Switch Confirmed to Not Have Pro Controller Support https://t.co/nTPHsxgw7j pic.twitter.com/6S7GsQ8pfp— USgamer (@USgamernet) September 2, 2018
First it was Super Mario Party, now TWEWY is the next game completely omitting Pro controller support. I’m not liking this at all. What’s the point of not supporting an additional controller? Even with SMP, which I get has mostly minigames focused on Joycon gimmicks like gyro and accelerometer or IR, but literally all of these features are available with the Pro Controller. This is frustrating, especially with TWEWY as I’m not looking forward to using pointer controls at all.
I played this on the 3DS recently and then on an iPhone. This game would be tough to play without a touch screen or without the better motion controls on the joycons.
Just a thought to why Square ditched the pro controller. Even motion controls would probably be tough with this game. Have you guys played this game recently? Idk why you would play this game without a touch screen or even a pro controller where the gyro controls aren’t as sensitive. That would be annoying or not work as well - again probably why Square ditched it, because it doesn’t work too well, more likely the reason.
Voez, Swim Out, Oceanhorn, Gorogoa, Implosion, Beach Buggy Racing, and probably a bunch more that I'm unaware of... All originally mobile games, and thus were entirely touch screen, yet all have been ported to the Switch and have full Pro controller support.
Nintendo has had absolutely no issues adding controller support to games that were literally designed to work as touch-screen only. There's no reason for anyone to have expected The World Ends With You to not have Pro controller support.
Really disappointing to hear, and actually has me reconsidering buying the game.
Mario Party was the first big upcoming game I'd heard of to not support Pro Controller at all, but I was trying out Cube Creator X (JP) with my gf the other day and noticed that it wouldn't let us pass the Start Screen when we booted the game. Disconnected the Joy-Cons and it started working without issue.
For some games like Mario Party, 1-2 Switch and TWEWY I can see this as a valid creative decision and don't mind it at all if it's justified due to inherent gameplay limitations. I kinda wish ARMS had been Joy-Con only too, since I probably would have liked it more if I didn't play it with my Pro Contoller the first time (it's quite boring without Joy-Cons tbh). For others like Cube Creator, some games are just lazy af to not implement Pro Controller support when the game utilizes Joy-Cons the same way as a Pro Con.
Off the top of my head, for various pin controls:
- Drag a line across the screen to create a damaging chain.
- Slash across Neku / tap empty space / hold empty space to fire bullets.
- Rapidly slash enemies for sword pins.
- Rapidly tap empty space for certain rising attack pins.
- Hold and drag to create a wall of fire.
- Draw a circle / blow into the mic to release a spinning slash.
That's not even all of them.
The combat's pretty fast-paced. You need to be able to constantly move Neku while being able to have the pointer where it needs to be when using pins. This type of reflexive aiming would get really cumbersome with the Pro Controller, I assume.
