Huge jrpg fan here: Octopath is hands down, the most overrated JRPG released in years.
How people are finding this one of the best JRPGs released shows how lost people are on the genre. First off, literally every story, besides maybe primrose, is nothing but boring generic JRPG tropes that are some of the most lazy writing seen in quite awhile. They way you bounce from boring story to story is quite frankly one of the most awful ways of telling a story I’ve ever seen in a videogame. The combat is decent, the job system that feels like it was imported straight from FFV is very nice, but when the actual story lines are complete trash, the game becomes tedious. Also what on earth is up with the boss fights taking F O R E V E R? It wouldn’t mean as much if they weren’t so slow, but my god, these are some of the most sleep inducing boss fights I’ve seen in ages. SO many better JRPGs have come out recently (persona 5, SMT IV APOCALYPSE, etrian odyssey V, xenoblade chronicles 2) make this game look so average in comparison. Hands down the most overhyped game In the genre in years

I really ❤ ed the game. A couple of the stories I didn’t like but the other stories I liked especially Primrose - she’s my girl, the art style is amazing, and the gameplay is really addictive and super fun. Plus I liked that there’s a story after all the stories are done that ties all the stories together.

I know it's not a JRPG but I had a lot more fun with Battle Chasers Nightwar before I played Octopath. I still haven't launched Octopath for about 3 weeks, I feel like I've already experienced it all even though I've only done everyone's 1st chapter.

The reason I didn't buy it was that it seemed like the epitome of average, and nothing so far has changed my perception. I also feel like all stories not converging will leave me feeling empty. I played the first demo and watched a bunch of YouTubers talk about the game, none of them said anything that sold the game to me, although most of them "liked" it, it looks really really standard. Not unlikable, but really standard.

You obviously look for stories that are unique and unpredictable, maybe he doesn't care as much about the story as long as it does a decent job of motivating you to finish the game? Or maybe he actually likes the stories and characters and doesn't mind the JRPG tropes because he actually likes JRPGs and its tropes? |

I don't know if it's overrated since I haven't seen anyone really talk about it outside the internet but it certainly isn't that good. It's decent. There's other RPGs this gen that are better, many others.

I agree. I've already played through it, sadly. P4G was okay, but lacked the style of 5 and honestly I just hated the shit out of most of the cast. I don't generally like SMT, but thank you for the recommendations. They are good games, just not really my speed. I like XBC2 more than Octo, agreed. I don't think Etrian Odyssey are very good RPGs, or Rune Factory, but those are your opinions and I respect them. Radiant Historia is an oooold game, but I guess the remaster/remake/whatever is fairly recent, so sure.
One more time, rewind. I'll find another way back here.

It's good for it's gameplay and exploration not it's story. XC2 is an absolute mess of cliches, bad writing techniques, plot holes, and tonal clashes. To use that as an example over octopath is honestly laughable. |

Persona 5 comes to mind as another great one, maybe Battle Chasers, but that's about it. I play a lot of JRPGs, but lately i'm just disappointed in most of them. Hopefully DQ 11 is another good one, i'm really looking forward to it.
