I would hope it has ultra cool art style like F ZERO X.

It's not that similar to F-Zero. For starters, races in F-Zero don't take place in space, nor are the machines capable of flying.

I really hope it’s more Starhawk/flight-sim combat than racer. If this turned out to be a Rogue Squadron spiritual successor I’d be so happy.

God, this honestly sounds beyond awful. Star Fox is already a series I'd prefer they killed. And Retro is a dev I expect great things from. For their amazing potential to be wasted on something as boring as a racing game, and then for it to ignore F-Zero in favor of one of Nintendo's worst franchises instead, is just some of the most disappointing news that they could have.

I assume it's just not true. We hear nothing concrete, except from Eurogamer "sources" that have been quite wrong before (Pokemon Stars lol). Imo, they just are in it for the clicks, and are reporting on some troll's out of context reddit post.

But damn, this is a bummer.
Looking forward to: FFVIIR, SM Odyssey, Blue Reflection, FFXII Zodiac Age, Splatoon 2, etc.

It's not even about my opinion of Star Fox though. I'm making the assumption that Star Fox is good. Star Fox Zero had shit controls, but at least it was still a Star Fox game. This is a redundant spinoff, wasting one of Nintendo's most talented studio's time to make a game about an optional ending to a DS Star Fox people didn't like very much to begin with in a series in dire need of a reboot.

I mean, bad controls are bad, but this is a more wide reaching problem that affects both Star Fox, other franchises, and one of Nintendo's best studios. I think those ramifications are worse.

The difference is that Rare could really pump out games... Retro takes their sweet fucking time. Rare had plenty of collectathons on the 64 already anyway, but on Switch we only have a single port from Retro.

That and Starfox has a very uncertain future. DK was doing really well back then.

But Diddy Kong Racing did actually do something new at the time (though now it's redundant).

Diddy Kong Racing had flying+boats+cars for the first time. It also did the adventure style racing game for the first time.

The former is now done better with Mario Kart 8, which added underwater and gravity, too. The latter is now done better by open world racing games or something like Kirby Air Ride.

EDIT: It doesn't help that Retro hasn't made something in 4 years. If this was one of many games, it'd be fine. Since this is assumedly what they have been wasting 4 years of everyone's lives on, it's awful. Rare made games fast, and they made a lot of them.

This is flawed logic. It was flawed with Federation Force and it's flawed here.

If Nintendo has enough faith in a series to try and use it to sell a spinoff that could just as easily be something else, then that means Nintendo doesn't consider the series "dead" or "dying."

So what, a company spends "too much time" on one game, so it better be some sort of semi-open world game with sidequests and stats and mod-able equipment and a compelling story or whatever? Give me a break. The world needs developers who are willing to give that much time to ANY genre that they're willing to take seriously, fuck the opinions of narrowminded idiots.

I think you're trying to make a completely different point than me. My point is that the fans tend to sit here and dictate when series are "dead" or being "killed" despite clear evidence from the company to the contrary. You don't stick an "expired" sticker on old food to make it sell better.

What F-Zero devs? What flood of major racing games that aren't a bunch of generic "real cars" shit? This is the shit I'm talking about, you're stupidly blowing off a whole genre as being "unworthy" of real developers.

Seriously, there was a time when "major" developers would make this sort of game and people would love it. Naughty Dog made Crash Team Racing, and a lot of people still argue it's on par with or better than some of the better Mario Kart entries. I'd love to see them take a break from their cinematic shooters to make "Un-Karted" or something.

For the record, this is about the genre combined with the series combined with the type of game that was described.

If Retro was making a racing game, I'd have liked to see what they could have added to it, instead of forcing them into this small bubble of "Star Fox" and a game type we've improved on for decades since Diddy Kong Racing.

Am I the only one that would be hyped as fuck if this game turns out to be real?

I've been waiting for this for a long time. Hopefully we can shoot mother fuckers down. Also please let there be a battle mode similar to Star Fox 64's multiplayer.

The only thing I’m disappointed about is that it isn’t Diddy Kong Racing 2.

You insulted me first when I just joking around <snip>

Wasn't an insult. It's a bullshit copy/paste meme response, and you posted it to dismiss what I said.
And now you insult me yet again.

Personally, I consider the Star Fox Command Ending where Krystal leaves Fox for Panther, joins teams Team Star Wolf, saves the galaxy, and Fox falls into depression before changing careers to a competitive racer, the canon end.

On the one hand, I do want another DKC game from Retro

    On the other...this sounds rad

The best, or worst part, of this is that if it turns out not to be true you'll see people wondering "WTF where's Star Fox GP? I was just warming up to the idea!"

I hope this is true but think it's fake. Why would Nintendo have Retro work on a Star Fox spinoff around the same time they were working on Star Fox Zero?

That makes it more likely, not less.

I'm in this camp. Since I've been thinking about what it could be like it's got me hoping it's real.

I think it would be fun. Basically, Diddy Kong Racing, but all airplanes and a sci-fi skin? Works for me. Can we do barrel rolls deflect attacks? Do we get to shoot all the time or do we need a power up? IDK, but It's a fine idea, and Star Fox needs a break from the original formula, cause they clearly have run out of most of their ideas after the SNES game.

How so? Nintendo had no Star Fox for 10 years then decides to make two games? Plus Star Fox Zero didn't perform well so Nintendo might of scrapped the project after seeing the results.

I agree, the possibilities of applying Star Fox stuff to a racing game could be really fun. It sounds crazy at first but the more I think about it the more excited I get at the possibilities.

God, please tell me this isn't true. A Star Fox racing game sounds fucking stupid. Like I'd understand if it was just some spinoff for the 3DS, but to say it's Retro's next major game that we've been waiting nearly 4 years for? Seriously?

If this turns out to be true then it'll be Federation Force all over again.

Why not? We've gotten an action platformer and a tower defense game... why not a racing game?
    - James McCloud, the human F-Zero pilot, is an obvious nod to Star Fox.
    - One of Command's endings has Fox and Falco converting their arwings into racecars.
    - It would be an instant buy if we get an anthropomorphic falcon known as "the Captain" :D

As someone who has never really cared about Star Fox or F-Zero, is this a thing people are actually down for? Like, will people cheer or be dissapointed if this is revealed to be Retro's project?

Not really. Imagine if it was a Kid Icarus racing game instead... At best it’s question marks.

Before you guys ask, here's the list of potential racers:
    - Fox
    - Falco
    - Peppy
    - Slippy
    - Krystal
    - ROB
    - Yaru (that's the tanuki in training mode BTW)
    - General Pepper
    - Wolf
    - Leon
    - Pigma
    - Andrew
    - Panther
    - Miyu (SF2)
    - Fay (SF2)
    - Katt (SF64)
    - Bill (SF64)
    - Lucy (SF Command)
    - Amanda (SF Command)
    - Dash (SF Command)
    - Marcus (SF Command)
    - Beltino (SF Assault)
    - Grippy (SF Zero)
    - Tricky (SF Adventures)
    - James
    - Andross

I got 26 characters... and that's without Samus Aran, Kirby, Rosalina and Captain Falcon* :P

*Yeah, imagine an anthropomorphic falcon named "the Captain", just like there's a human-like James McCloud in F-Zero XD
