Never had an official PC release, but the first game that popped into my head was Ogre Battle 64. Always thought that was a well crafted game worth a couple play throughs.

Record of Lodoss war for the Dreamcast, it's a Diablo clone but i love the way you build your character through upgrading items instead of the standard loot grinding.

This game was pretty awesome.

I vaguely remember this one spot I would go where I think it was a giant worm and he couldn't kill me but was high level. I would spend hours killing him over and over just to level up lol

Hell yeah! I remember using that little dungeon to level up from like 20 to 60, but it was only really safe to kill those worms with fire magic if you built your character with enough magic damage, they always 1 shot me whenever i got near them lol.

Recent: Night in the Woods. People go nuts over cinematic story games like Life is Strange but tend to ignore this game which in my opinion is far better due to the great dialogue and highly relatable characters and themes, plus the soundtrack is amazing. Visuals aren't amazing but they work.

Overall: The Final Fantasy Legend. It's actually the original SaGa game but they branded it as Final Fantasy to make it more approachable. Yeah, I know SaGa games are a bit of a mess. They're an absolute grind, highly random / luck-based, generally have very minimal story or stories that don't really make sense or aren't held together by much of anything. Don't care. I've played through FFL like 30 times and with all kinds of different party setups or solo runs. The music in Byak Ko's cloud world really gets my motor running.

I don’t mean to turn into a bible nerd, but when you kill the person, the demon is being “cast” out and you’re to smite it. Some have demons and some are neutral and just need to be saved. That’s not how it works in the Bible but hey! Lol.

Yeah it doesn’t shock me this is how Christianity was taught in games.

(I got these games from overseas in a catalog back in the day. I never saw them sold in stores. I even got the Joshua’s quest game where you destroy the walls of Jericho).

I'm convinced most people hating on DMC2 didn't even play it.

The game is so awesome from start to finish.

Only bad thing about DMC2 is that they included Dante, he sucks so much.

Other bad things about DMC2:
* Only 1 melee weapon per character (they had 'longer/weaker' and 'shorter/stronger' variants that amounted to no real difference)
* Forgettable enemies and bosses
* By far the least difficulty in the series. DMD difficulty in DMC2 was easier than Normal mode in the first and third game, in large part due to extremely overpowered dodging. The only boss that was "difficult" in the game was more time-consuming than anything else and I believe it was probably bugged: Lucia's leviathan boss would never exit invisibility mode when played on DMD difficulty, so it could never be targeted and had to be worn down over an extremely long battle with depth charges and DT angel feathers. Probably impossible to S-Rank on DMD unless playing as Trish due to her getting the Nightmare Beta gun or whatever it's called for underwater.

^ Also, Dante's final boss could be easily beaten without taking damage if you just stood out of reach and focused it down with the SMG or grenade launcher. But as you say, Dante was the worst part of the game.

What was nice about the game is that it had the Bloody Palace. But as far as DMC goes there are pretty good reasons why it's considered the worst in the 4-part series.

Well I started with the Lucia part obviously and I played it like an adventure game and I actually really liked her weapons, you basically had to spam then nonstop, I can see how that could be bothersome, but didn't bother me, I had a lot of fun, I liked the enemies too. The game is just really beautiful and fantastic. I also liked the bosses, especially the lawnmower man one lol...

Also had to spam (and dodge) forever...

Man idk I really liked the world, the emptiness, the occasional enemies, but especially the graphics / artstyle.

Then I played the Dante part and it was all gone... I didn't have my awesome weapons anymore, the world was kinda uninteresting and the enemies shallow.

I still beat it and I want to go back to play with Lucia again but that whole Dante part was a downer for sure...

It's not a cult classic I think but I hope someone remembers Take No Prisoners. It was a bloody (almost open world) top down shooter where you could travel to various districts and kill all manner of creatures and baddies with awesome weapons; weapons like implosion grenade which literally sucks everything in range inside it crushing them, and the jelly grenade launcher which turns foes into jelly statues you can kill easy in a splash of blood, guts and green jelly fun.

Lesser known? Star Control II -- also known as freeware game Ur-Quan Masters, available for PC, home consoles, and even mobile.

Completely ignored? Jones in the Fast Lane -- it's like the boardgame LIFE except it makes more sense (the passage of time between players is screwy though).

Console game? Faselei! -- Absolutely nobody's heard of it because it was on a flash-in-the-pan handheld that was slightly less ignored than the N-Gage. Faselei has politics and intrigue and giant mecha; it plays akin to a roguelike SRPG.

Totally obsolete game, no digital version of it exists that I'm aware of, and it's hard to get it working on modern versions of Windows. It was the original robot design and programming game, and IMO still one of the best (although it did have a handful of bugs). The programming was actually pretty intuitive - you connected components via "wires" and then set values for those components to trigger on/off. Included wheeled, tank (treads), and hover chassis, and a pretty huge variety of challenges, like Sumo, which limited you to hover chassis (meaning tons of inertia), and you had to program a bot to push the other bot out of a ring without being pushed out yourself, or gem collection, where you used wheeled bots (I think) with baskets to drive around and collect gems of different value and turn them in to a goal to score points - higher value gems were farther away, and being "tagged" by another bot stole all the gems you were carrying, so farther away also carried more risk of getting tagged. Other modes included hot potato, maze navigation (randomly generated maze), figure 8 track race, drag race with hover where you had to be first across the goal AND stop before hitting electrical hazard after, and of course deathmatch and CTF. Lots of fun game modes, pretty great programming system, and just a fantastically fun robot programming game in general. The more recent ones just haven't been as good IMO.

Sacrifice
It's known, but not super well-known. Very good third-person RTS, if that makes sense. You're a summoner, and "souls" are your resource to summon your armies. Collect neutral souls on the battlefield, and kill enemies and protect your little soul collectors long enough for them to suck up enemy souls, return them to your altar to convert them to your side. End goal was to reach the enemy's altar and sacrifice one of your creatures on it to destroy it, while keeping yourself and your creature alive long enough to complete the sacrifice. Very unique, fun gameplay.

Conquest: Frontier Wars
Possibly the best lesser-known asymmetric RTS I've played, with some fantastic mechanics used in ways no other game has. Set in space, you choose one of three races, each with different strengths and weaknesses. Typical RTS gameplay involving gathering resources, base building, and building armies. But battles can happen across a number of maps simultaneously, and the control system is super intuitive for managing it all. Wormholes connect all the different maps together, and you can build a jump gate on a wormhole to take control of it and prevent enemies from using that wormhole, while expanding a supply line to the linked system on the other end. There was a serious supply mechanic in the game that was super well done. Almost all ships had limited supply of ammunition, and could run empty mid-battle if you weren't careful. You could counter this by including supply ships in your fleet, which greatly extended your ammo reserves if you could protect those supply ships. Those, in turn, supplied from supply depots, which offered unlimited supplies as long as they had an unbroken chain of jump gates to a system where you had a headquarters built. Without that chain, the depots could not resupply ships. The whole game was very well done, and should absolutely be in every RTS fan's library.

Back in the 90s I played a game called "The Settlers" on the Amiga. It was a great game and I remember spending hours upon hours just figuring out all the details on how to play (because I didn't have the manual and the internet wasn't a thing back then).

I got several people hooked on it and I think it was also released on PC as "Serf City"

But anyway, it was kind of a RTS style game with a huge focus on economy. Just to feed your miners you had to have a farmer to grow wheat, and then a miller to turn it into flour, and then a baker to make bread.

Apparently it just got a re-release for windows 10 (since Serf City was for DOS) called Settlers: History Edition.

I think just about the only game to sorta recapture that feeling was Anno 1404:Dawn of Discovery, though that game was even MORE detailed in the economy.

^I remember The Settlers... I loved that game, and most of the subsequent Settlers games that came after it. Economy was always the larger focus, and several didn't even include combat at all. The economies were far more complex than RTS, which I found pretty cool.

Current most similar game I think is Northland.

Well yeah, the series is kinda big now, but back in the 90s nobody knew it (because of the name change and because the Amiga was a niche market). I tried playing some of the later games in the series and it just didn't scratch the same itch somehow.

Like I said, the only one in recent memory to come close was Anno 1404.
Jade Cocoon on PS1. Voice acting, anime art, and you captured & merged monsters to battle. Must've put hundreds of hours into the game over the years. The sequel for PS2 sucked, but something about the first just clicked for me. I still keep a PSX emulator around when I get the urge.

Yes exactly! You even look like a child. Your weapons are the fruits of the spirit and along with the "armor of god" that you collect (essences like in Zelda) you go and defeat Satan. Once you get the "Sword of the spirit" you shoot a sword across the map that kills everything in it's path and sends them to heaven.

"10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." -Ephesians 6:10-18

The game holds true to this passage verbatim. That's why I like it. It's literally the Christianity to it's core which is murdering people against their will and sending them to heaven or hell if they refuse. If I never heard about God, I wouldn't be going to hell. Sorry, again I didn't mean to turn all bible nerd lmao. Technically you're not supposed to kill people irl and it's context is bible passages, but the game took it literally hehe.

I remember that game, but only from the demo on one of the Playstation magazine demo discs. I still have it somewhere I think. I never did see it for sale anywhere though or I might have thought about picking it up.

Looking at Amazon there's like maybe 2 copies for sale, one is a Japanese Import and the other is some guy trying to sell it for $300. Yeesh.

RIP EMUparadise. I made some gifs from playing the emulated version: https://imgur.com/a/EPlUD

The gameplay is still pretty tight even by modern standards. There's an argument that it should control like a twin-stick shooter because that's more intuitive but I don't think so. It's not that type of game because the entire thing is balanced around either dropping the bombs in place or throwing them directly ahead.

I remember that demo disk though. I used it to convince my friend to import the Japanese version of the game and it was so awesome. Took me two days on the final boss memorizing his patterns and coming up with a consistent strategy. Finally beating it was probably one of the most satisfying gaming moments I've had.

Sometimes whenever I think to myself "I should speedrun a game and go for a record" I know for a fact that it'll be Silent Bomber. I'm always trying to spread the word as much as I can and speedrunning it would be a good way to do that.

The first person shooter Timeshift, from about a decade back. It received mediocre to bad reviews, and it does have real problems, but I like parts of the game a lot, and I've played through it maybe more than half a dozen times already, and will no doubt do so again.

The game is very variable, with some great parts then parts that are boring, but the good parts of the game can be very good. It's another first person shooter, where you can control time. You don't control time by travelling to the past or future, though you do travel through time involuntarily during the non-interactive cutscenes. Instead, you control time precisely as you choose, with the ability to pause the game world, or put the world into slow motion, and even reverse time, though not for more than a few second, and then you have to wait for your time control mechanism to recharge (which takes about twice as long as the pause/slow motion/rewind function lasts) before you can manipulate time again.

The problems with the game are that it feels linear (most FPSs are linear, but the good ones tend to fool you into not noticing it), the quality of the levels varies greatly, the story is very badly told (I've completed the game several times, and still can't remember much of the story), it has recharging health/shield, a weapon carrying limit (though at least it's three weapons in this game, not two), and the game's ending makes you want a sequel, which never came since this game sold so badly.

On the plus side, the game is often a lot of fun, the weapons are great, the alternative timeline is pretty atmospheric, and the time powers are a lot of fun to use. Plus, if you like weather effects (I do), the rain is great in this game, very realistic, and looks fantastic when you pause, slow or reverse time.

If you like science fiction first person shooters, then you should give Timeshift a go, especially as it's bound to be really inexpensive now.
I'm a PC and console gamer - I love good games, regardless of their host system.

That one actually got a lot of love at the time, at least from what I saw. I tried on a few occasions to get into it and although I love the variety of options for character building, I could never get into the game itself.

Well, plus it was Black Isle buggy. Last time I gave it a shot all of my saved games somehow got overwritten with my character in a blank field with nothing but an NPC who functioned as the shopkeeper dialogue that offers your initial equipment loadout for the beginning of the game.

I guess I'll say Time Commando. Not sure if the game is even good and it probably doesn't hold up well but it was one of the earliest PC games I played as a kid. Long story short, your a guy that travels through different time periods fighting through enemies and environments of varying themes, from prehistoric, to fuedal Japan, to western, to future and more. It's a 90s game so it's clunky as hell and probably sucks by today's standards. Still has a special place in my memories though.

The Amiga version of the game was the best. I bought the PC version on GoG and the intro is just disappointing for someone who remembered the Amiga version. It starts out with an animation that would be more fitting for "Worms" than Cannon Fodder, and then all the music is pretty much MIDI after that. 😑

I just thought of another game for this list: Carnage Heart (PS1)
It's a game where you start out with parts to make a mech, and you have to design the program it uses to search and destroy. Once the combat starts all you can do is watch nervously as you see your team of 3 mechs battle the enemy, but it's really cool when you see it work just as you anticipated.

I don't think the game ever sold many copies in the US, but I would love to see a similar game released today, just maybe with more variation in the parts you can buy/upgrade so that you couldn't win every battle with one mech with the fastest, most-awesome program.
