It's hard to answer, because the worst thing about playing online is actually a combination of several of the options - too many assholes.

Cheating/hacking, trolls, ragequitters, racism/flaming/other crap, general toxicity... all boils down to too many assholes these days.

Overwatch used to be fantastic to play online for about the first three months or so. In all that time, I played a lot online, and not one negative comment or jerk. Losing teams would give GGs all the time, people on both teams would congratulate a player who made a particularly good play, and overall it was just very friendly competition and a ton of fun.

Then all the LoL trolls found the game and moved in. Jerk behavior ramped up considerably, and the game became infested with toxic assholes. That was further amplified by the ranked competitive mode. Now people are just angry all the time. Nobody seems to play for fun, people flame, ragequit, and all that.

So yeah... biggest problem is that there are too many assholes in online gaming.

Nah. It's really simple.

LAG

lag

I've dealt with lag. Yeah, it sucks, but it's *far* from the worst thing about online gaming. When you have lag with people you know that are all friendly and just having fun, lag may make you lose a match or something, but it's still all in good fun, people joke about it, blame your loss on the lag, etc... you've still enjoyed yourself and been entertained.

I don't care if I had a ping of 1 though, if I'm in a game loaded with assholes being assholes, I will not enjoy it. At all. Even if I kick all their asses and win by a landslide.

Games with assholes are not fun... at all. Games with lag can be.

Nothing of that is mutual exclusive, you can have it all in one game and a toxic player who's also laggy on top can get easily the worst thing ever...

A toxic player without lag doesn't bother me much tbh, it's in combination with being a laggy fuck that's annoying as hell.

I never claimed either was mutually exclusive. The poll is what we think the worst thing about online gaming is. For me, it's assholes.

I ask myself - can I have an enjoyable game if it:

* Has no lag, no assholes? - Yes.
* Has no lag, has assholes? - No.
* Has lag, no assholes? - Yes.
* Has lag, has assholes? - No.

I can enjoy myself even in games with lag - if the game has good, fun people playing. There are virtually no situations where I can enjoy a game with assholes though, lag or not.

I've actually played games with all four conditions. The one factor through every single game I've not enjoyed or hated has been that there were assholes playing. That, for me, is the worst part of online gaming.

I'm surprised trash talk gets this much hate. It's just pre/mid game locker room talk. Didn't any of you guys play sports growing up? We all trash talk each other till the end when we have to say good game, it's standard procedure. Everyone gets to shit on each other because there's a good chance you'll "one up" the guy trash talking you even if you don't win. I've made some friends trash talking people and making them laugh.

Trash talk is fine as long as it remains good-natured trash talk. Friends and I used to trash talk all the time when we played. But none of us ever meant it.. it was just in fun. These days, people take it to the "fuck your mother" level, and get personal/serious about it, and mean, and that I don't view as trash talk.

That's the thing, people legitimately get upset when I say "your mother" as a response to trash talk. Trash talk pertains to the game for me although "your mother" is a generic childs insult.

For example someone will have the gold knife on CSGO war games and they'll fail to kill me and even though I'm not winning, I'll still jump on the mic and trash talk after I wreck him. If anything it's just gonna keep em interested in playing the game and get better. You'll never believe this though dude, the next game we're on the same team and not trash talking each other. What a shock! It's almost as if it was just for that situation and we're all good after it's over like real life.

I was camping in one spot in CSGO, kept killing the same guy like 4-5 times in a row (he never really took off in the game lmao), he was getting mad on mic but it was just locker room trash. That's cool dude, I was just antagonizing him anyways so it's all just game related. Next game me and him were on same team and it's all good. Maybe that's just CSGO. I've had the complete opposite experience in R6 Siege. Rocket League I have no issues with even though I trash talk and they do as well.

I like trash talk but I do have some friends who get really mean on trash talking as if they're being emotionally abusive to people. It's pretty bad ROFLMAO.

Yeah, but there's a key difference there. You're talking about saying "your mother" as a response to someone else's trash talk. I'm talking about someone getting so pissed at you they just scream "fuck your mother." That's a huge difference from
"Aww, did that payload slip right past you...?"
"Your mother" or "no, but your mother did."

It all comes down to whether you're just having fun with the other person, or you're intentionally trying to piss them off, or worse yet, you're doing it because you're actually angry yourself. If it's all in good fun and not getting too serious, it's fine. That's pretty rare these days though.

Yeh, I lump those people into the asshole category too. People who won't play right (or don't know how), but absolutely refuse to listen to advice even if it's much more gentle/tactful than "get them off my ass!" and get all offended and angry instead I still consider to be assholes.

Without reading any of the other messages (so this may have been addressed) to me, the worst thing about online is when they ignore offline/single player in favor of online because it can stop pirates (or so they *think*).
Combine that with all of the other stuff and it just means that the game has a very limited shelf-life and then it's worthless. At least in the case of Denuvo, when they crack the game and/or they realize that the DRM is useless and remove it, the game will still work. Sucks that you have to crack it, but oh well. In the case of a game with a primarily online focus, if there's no servers and no players, then even if the game works there's no point.

I don't really care as much about the games that have never been offline (like TF2 may have bots but there's never really been an offline mode to it other than the practice mode mod). It really only applies to games where you EXPECT to play offline only to find out they gimped the offline so they could sell in-game currency, special weapons, loot boxes, etc.

I can adapt to lag assuming it's constant. If it's like everything is fine and then OOPS 400ping for 15 seconds...well then no, that is not acceptable. Assholes can ruin a game, but as long as you can mute/block them then it's not as bad, and I've actually seen some games where the whole server will team up on the one jerk until he leaves.

Hackers ruin a game because you can't even win if the whole server teams up against the guy usually... the only thing that beats a hacker is banning them...assuming they can't just pull up a new account and go right back to hacking.

Bad matchmaking ruins games too...I don't see why you can't just put up a server browser and let people pick where they want to go, but I guess that just means that some people pay for a server that goes mostly unused for the whole month and might see 30 minutes of use (if you can get people to populate the server at all).

Easily trash talk. I'm just to old to put up with it now in my 30's. Every day in Rocket League it's people even those grouped together spamming the chat commands.

In MHW yesterday fighting Kulve Taroth someone put down a barrel bomb next to me just as I fired a quick shot, a cone AoE attack, which blew it up so he gets mad and calls me out in chat "like omg really Dredj wtf" so I explain what happened then he starts making shit up saying it was a charged shot and I aimed it, meanwhile his mate is hitting me knocking me around. Disgusted with their attitude I was going to leave the quest but he kicked me first.

Lag and frequent disconnection. Since I'm in malaysia, I've to content with 300ms ~ 1000ms ping. My performance and reaction is not as good with westerners who play with 50ms ping. FPS multiplayer games are out of the question. I can't even shoot a zombie who is charging at me at Dayz unless the zombie is right at my face. Also I've to content with frequent disconnection, hence why I prefer to go dungeoning/raiding with guildmates who are more understanding when I dc either that or I go solo most of the time. PUG will always kick me out the moment I dc.

It will always be lag for me. People are shit but thats fundamental to the nature of people, gaming or not. Choosing to play team based games is unfortunately choosing to wade knee deep into that muck. As long as games properly implement the ability to silence text/voice/spammers and report cheaters thosee are not a problem for me.

If you could play online games with the responsiveness of lan the entire fighting game genre would be saved, people from other regions would get less hate, one giant excuse removed from the equation, peer-to-peer games would actually be fine etc.

People with godlike reflexes. I really hate playing against people that can consistently headshot a tiny fast moving target from 30 miles away without scoping or taking time to aim. Slight exaggeration of course, but you get the point. In non-shooter online games where grinding determines who's strongest, it'd be the extreme no-lifers, who make the middle no-lifers like myself look like newborns. There's nothing wrong with it or that should be done about it, but I'm just saying it's rarely fun to play against other players when some of them seem superhuman.

Then there's the lag, and the trolls. That's about it for me.

For me, is the fact that one day the servers will go offline, hence, all your invested time will be a waste (RIP Dust 514). Then again, NOTHING lasts forever.

Other than that, I really hate people that complain about everything. Snipers that start insulting when they get sniped. Campers that start complaining about others camping. I guess people who doesn't know how a competition works.

Yeah, I've seen a few places online where there is a good community. I remember playing Mechwarrior online, I even found people who would teach you on the fly to try to make the team win even when there were others playing alone and getting themselves killed. That's where I realized that good leaders, regardless of the circumstances, can guide a team to win. I was one of the newbies, but still, there were times that we had good leadership and would conquer the enemy with excellent tactics.

    Online multi-player is a treadmill.
A single player game ends and you start something new (or the same game, using different choices, etc).

It's like the arcades of the 80s. Never feels satisfying, without an ending.
We're all living in Amerika, Amerika ist wunderbar -
We're all living in Amerika, Coca-Cola, sometimes war...
I simply dislike most genres that are conducive to multiplayer. Don't like MMO's, don't like fighting games or racing games, etc.

The only ones I do like are very specific shooters (very high skill curves where it takes like 10+ body shots to kill so headshots are highly encouraged, no regenerating health, other stuff) and Diablo 2 (only 2, not 3).

One of my favorite shooters (in terms of mechanics) was ruined by lag, it had terrible coding which made it so being laggy was a huge advantage to you, and for some reason it let you choose your own upload speed so you could very easily exploit that fact. And consequently lag switching was even more advantageous so cheating was a huge problem, and the game was very lax in regulation so they were rarely banned.

So I would go with lag if I were to pick one of the poll options besides other.

His name was MSIbeast, and this is on PS4, so I asked if he was into PC gaming, and he says "yeah, you don't need to talk to me about PC gaming buddy". Very condescending and passive aggressive.

Was like that the entire match, just a rude guy.

    Lag.

I love M & B Warband: Napoleonic Wars commander battle, but the lag is often so bad that you can't change your officer's item, and end up stuck with just the telescope. Not good when you charge the enemy and can't actually fight.

Also, 70% of gamers never played online? I find that extremely hard to believe.

Well, that's the data for console. Lots of games give you a trophy for playing your first online match, and in most games, only about 20%-40% of people get the trophy.

I admit, PC might be a bit higher.

More than 70% of people have never played online, and are not interested in it, but for those that do, what annoys you the most? What makes it so overrated?

Everything. Every option jumped out at me as awful to deal with, all are reasons why I dislike online. I very strongly prefer single player games, so long as they do not have the possibility of being shut down in the future due to DRM servers being taken down(meaning they aren't actually offline games).

Dedicated single player games are just vastly superior experiences IMO. I went through a WOW phase in the past and I'm just completely over it now. I've found RPGs like the Witcher 3 or heavily modded Skyrim/Fallout 4 or BOTW/other Nintendo games to be so much better.

I'm surprised you find it so easy to tell the difference between sucking and deliberately sucking. I tend to put them both in the same category of "not helpful".
When i started playing TF2 last year, i was acutely aware that i wasn't being very helpful to the mission as i wasn't clear on the best tactics. You're saying you can tell when someone doesn't know what they're supposed to be doing versus someone who knows what they're supposed to be doing but isn't doing it. I don't believe you.

It's very simple really. The person who either legitimately is bad or is new will generally attempt to correct their issues when politely asked to do so even if they're not always successful. The other group will deflect with the aforementioned "It's not comp bro" or "I play for fun" or somesuch
