Saw this on Reddit - you pay for a subscription, and then have to wait in a queue to play (I assume because the servers are full).

9LzOHnu

That, to me, is a total failure to provide a good service. Imagine if Netflix pulled this kind of s***.

Then don't use it.

Sony will still be successful.

BTW: wouldn't full servers mean a lot of people are actually using the service?

This is sony you're talking about. So no.
25+ years of gaming taught me one important life lesson. You normally don't have to push start at the main menu.

Hmm I never had to wait when I used it. Though I was on PC, not sure if that had anything to do with it. It was a trial anyway, I'd never pay for this.

Huh, I've never seen that screen before, and I bet I have well over 200 hours into PSNow at this point. Sucks for that person, but to be honest, I can't truly say that an additional 4 minute wait to start playing something would really bother me, provided the 4 minute estimate was true and it didn't happen often.

Plus, it really would mean the servers are full which means many people are using the service, which is likely good news for Sony, not that that really means much to me.
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/928596/geforce-now/waiting-in-queue/

This is expected with a streaming game service, you do know these games are run on custom PS3/PS4 server cores? No s*** if there is not enough hardware, you end up in a queue.

This isn't like your run of the mill multiplayer server where user processing usage is not even 1% of what cloud gaming is doing.

I'm just wondering which is it now: Is PSNow a flop for Sony still because users don't use it, or it's a flop because they are at max capacity at the moment?

That's actually kinda funny.

"I wanna play this game!"

"Ok, then... wait in this virtual line! Your turn is coming up soon!"

I mean, I get the likelihood of why it's set up in that manner, but it still paints a funny mental picture.

That's the exact reason I dropped GeForce Now. You spent 90% of your time in queue.
Yo dawg I heard you needed some Xbox One X with your Xbox One S and Xbox One, so I bought you some books instead.

That would be a disaster seeing the customer base for Netflix is huge. I have noticed that popular movies have tendency to load slower then unpopular ones.

So what's the difference between this and queuing in an MMO?

Xbox Pass is quite literally better than this in everywhere but in one main, important area, and that games unfortunately.
mashu 5 hours ago#29
I won't go back to PSNow until the adopt the iTunes rental model. Let us download the full game and play it sans streaming for the specified amount of time, and then the rental no longer works. You can delete it or hang onto it and renew a license for it again. Streaming sucked the last time I tried it for any game that had precise timing. Invariably, no matter what your connection speed, the service gets a hiccup and you die or fail a task.

Well an MMO, you know that its always a possiblity that servers can be overfull.

With this however, you are paying a $100 per year and you usually would think this is not suppose to happen considering a $100 per person per year is being used to fund this. So you would think they would have more servers by now

WoW costs $180 a year and has massive queues. And has a lot more users paying that, so they should never have queues by your logic.

Oh come on... a 4 minute queue is not bad at all. Definitely not bad enough to call it a failure. There are other things you can say about Playstation Now that are more reasonable to base a claim of failure upon, like frequent lag, games quitting out randomly, random resetting. Now if the queues start getting up to like 10 or 15 minutes, then there's a real problem.
The GameFAQs update ruined the look of signatures.

So what's the difference between this and queuing in an MMO?

This is (likely) a hardware tie-up feature, and not a login queue. Most MMOs nowadays have a queue to log in, but not to actually play the game itself. I.E. the server that checks your credentials and allows you access to your game server with your selected character has to verify that, yes, you are Username and that your password really is Password and that your character Thunderbreaker Heartsmasherfart is actually a registered character to that account with that password. That can get overloaded and then nobody can get in - but those already in and playing might not have any issues.

If the hardware couldn't support any other connections to that game server, though, likely you couldn't log in to that server at all, regardless of the login server's queue or lack thereof.

I wouldn't even venture saying "streaming." Netflix's servers aren't having to process whole video games at once; that's where the queue comes from.

$100 a year is cheaper than Netflix... And yet this is processing video games, not movies.

I wouldn't think it's a problem but wouldn't have expected a queue for this service regardless of how long or short it may be.

Not that it isn't expected people go the hyperbole route to act like simply acknowledging the existence of something is the same as acting like it's horrible.

s*** I pay 100 bucks a year for Amazon Prime and I don't even use it every day. These guys having to wait 4 minutes to stream a game they will possible play for hours seems quaint.

Pretty sure this is why nobody has ever taken video game streaming seriously.

It was a neat experiment, but I think we can all agree that we just aren't ready for it yet. Maybe someday we will have the online infrastructure needed for it, but for now it's just too flawed.
