As someone who routinely hosts N64 nights with friends... MK64 has already been beaten. It doesn't hold up like so many people seem to think it does.

I think pretty much every time a new MK has come out, aside from Super Circuit & Wii, that it has become the best one.
I was completely obsessed with MK64 in 1997, but I feel that Double Dash, DS, 7, & 8 have all improved the formula to the point that 64 is hard to go back to.

Its the best of all time imo I think you mean DS. I'm tired of this Mario Kart 8 bullshit. First they released an unfinished game, Then they released 16 Racing Tracks and 6 characters (3 of them are fucking clones) So they released DLC but could not be bothered to add Battle Tracks. And now they released a 'Deluxe' version for the Nintendo Switch. Despite all those updates to the game, they still couldn't get the item balance done right. Is Nintendo not capable of balancing their own shit anymore?

Mario Kart 64 was disappointing on day one. It was still fun, but it was a very noticeable downgrade compared to the SNES original, and it continues to be the worst game in the series in my opinion. Even over Super Circuit.

Bad framerate, no bots to race in multiplayer with your friends, controls aren't great, especially with the terrible N64 analog stick. The list goes on. I just played it last week on four player split screen. It was fun, of course, but it hasn't aged well at all. People greatly enjoyed playing MK8 more when we switched (no pun intended) over. Same with games like Goldeneye. Was a blast back in the day, but it's nearly unplayable now.

Just stop and accept that Mario Kart 8 is our lord and savior, and the best game of the franchise. Not when the item balance is messed up. Mario Kart Wii also had a shit item balance but the chaos was a ton of fun in Local Multiplayer. The same cannot be said for Mario Kart 8 I also prefer Wii's and/or DS (NEW) tracks in my opinion MK8 has one of the shittiest tracks I've ever seen in a MK game. - Ice Ice Outpost - Rainbow Road - Water Park - Excite Bike - Bone Dry Ruins - Bowser's Castle - Mario Circuit Not to mention Mario Kart 8's retro track selections sucks. - Wii Moo Moo Meadows - N64 Toad's Turnpike - N64 Royal Raceway - 3DS Music Park - Wii Grumble Volcano - N64 Yoshi Valley - GCN Dry Dry Desert - Wii Wario's Gold Mine - 3DS Neo Bowser City - GCN Yoshi Circuit They selected the worse tracks from the Wii and 3DS Mario Kart. There's also too many N64 Tracks.

Mario Kart 64 had a lot of flaws IMO. It was fun for it's time, but aged poorly like the original SNES game.
1. Bugged short cuts ruined a lot of the maps when they were found out. Only exception is maybe rainbow road, because that map was way too long and... very boring designed over all with the rails everywhere and very basic in design. 2. How battle was set up, maps like block fort were kind of broken. Since owning the higher ground had infinitely better in terms of winning matches then actually duking it out. Hide up top, place peels everywhere, spam shells below, win. It's still a lot of fun, it's just that newer installments of Mario Kart improved the formula better. I will admit though that Mario Kart 64 had one of my absolute favorite maps of all time, due to it's difficulty. Which was Toad's Turnpike when playing mirrored.

As far as I'm concerned, they've continually topped each previous edition with each new release. I'd say 8 is the best, with MK8D being the best version.

'Mario Kart 64' wasn't even that good. The steering is crap. People are seriously looking at that game through rose-tinted glasses.
The battle mode was fun but the racing not so much. |

MKDS is the best one imo.

I haven't really played much of Super Circuit so I can't rank that one, but outside of that one plus Double Dash (don't like how that one controls.Weird physics or something ) and Wii (hated the terrible balance and couldn't really get into any of the new tracks ), I'd say every post 64 Mario Kart game has surpassed 64. And by a lot. My favorites are probably DS and 7. I need to play more of 8 though. Perfectly explains why the Nintendo boards are toxic and are full of trolls/haters.I will say, I enjoyed Mario Kart 64's Battle Mode and Toad's Turnpike on Mirror, but it's my second least favourite Mario Kart, but I still had fun with it.
My least favourite Mario Kart is Super Circuit, mainly for the awful powersliding. At least, I could only seem to powerslide easily with heavy characters.
My favourite Mario Karts are 64, 8 and Double Dash!! 8 for the local multiplayer, at least.
Wii was enjoyable enough, but it was a bit too chaotic.
7 had a lack of characters, but it was still fun and I enjoyed the new tracks.
