Started a new save file with the intention of actually beating the game this time. Not very far but yeah, this game is dated as f***. Doesn't even have a map despite the level design really calling for it.

AM2R is so much better, it's not even funny. Can't wait for Samus Returns either.

It's not your place to decide which games aged poorly.
DorkLink said I could borrow his signature so I did (see below):

If you want to experience Metroid 2, AM2R is the only way to do it. The GB version is horrendously dated.

When I bought the game with my own f***ing money, I have every right to do so.

Especially with an old ass game like Metroid 2.

I love the original. That being said it is really flawed.

It introduced some great things to the series, but it has definitely been improved on in subsequent games. The (official) remake looks like it'll actually be pretty good though. Even if I'm a tiny bit apprehensive about Mercurysteam working on it, I'm mostly hopeful.
But it Metroid 2's case it's fine as two years later Super Metroid pretty much perfected the formula making Metroid two archaic by comparison.

I want to play Super Metroid some time I've beaten the first 2 prime games (played a good chunk of the third)

And beaten Zero Mission too.

Agreed. I respect the game for introducing so many elements that are crucial to the series but the game itself has aged terribly. The Spider-Ball should totally come back though.

Eh, trust me. Metroid 2 is surprisingly linear so you don't really need a map very much. Just look at an online map of the GB version.

Edit: Also, what's wrong with the melee s*** in the official remake? It's a nice addition, and one of the few things I actually enjoyed about Other M. (Plus you don't have to use it.)

Yeah, I love Metroid 2 but it's definitely showing its age lol. I'm really excited about Samus Returns.

Do it. SM is one of the GOAT. All of the good Metroid games are some of the GOAT. Fantastic series.

I'm upset we don't get the legacy edition that they get in europe
As much as I hate Amibo content I am tempted to buy the squishy Metroid for the fusion mode.

All we get is that soundtrack. Which is nice, but holy crap that GameBoy-cartridge-styled steelbook looks amazing.

Speaking of, I only have an OG 3DS so to actually use the amiibos, I'd need to buy an NFC reader

i'm really hoping you can unlock all that s*** in-game

might buy the amiibos at some point just for collector's purposes though

Nope. I was gonna get them anyway but I'm still pretty disappointed. That's significant bonus content locked away behind these things.

Yeah.

Super Metriod and prime are still great but the original game and M2 are just unplayable to me.

Just make sure it comes with a Power Tag. That's what you'll be using to spoof amiibo. Just do a bit of research so you know exactly what to get.

I don't know why people keep saying this, the game was deliberately designed to not need a map. Each area is self-contained and small enough to easily remember your way around.

The map isn't flat. It's full of popouts, overlaps, and bits that don't line up.

Are you talking about the map that you just posted? >_>

I'd been using the one on this site. I find that it helps.

Metroid II is much better with the color hack. I'd still recommend using save states unless you're already a fan of "NES hard" games. It's worth playing for the story elements. The beginning of Super Metroid makes a lot more sense after you've played II.

Every Metroid 2 map is going to have arrows connecting parts that just don't line up and/or stack on top of each-other.

https://www.gamefaqs.com/gameboy/585799-metroid-ii-return-of-samus/faqs/28694?raw=1
Just look at the area in the upper right (first ruins). You're either going to have an arrow (or letter) in the high path or the low path, because the map just doesn't fit.

There's no way an "in-game" map would work, without being broken up worse than Fusion's map.

If you have the GB cart you can play with the intended M2DX color palate on a Super Game Boy or GBA SP. I'm not 100% sure if an original GBA will display the expanded palate, but I tested it out on an SP the other day.

I also saw color hack reproduction GBC carts on eBay for like $5 recently.
