Games like Prince of Persia 2008 not having a game over pissed a lot of people off(not for me), everyone claimed Ubi was making the game more causal friendly.

Enter Super Mario Odysse, and Nintendo fans are happy it lost it's game over screen, which I can now see as kids hate losing in Mario games, but it is just funny how you can clearly see both demographic split on things like this

Or people's opinions of how a game should be structured have changed over the past 9 years?

What an egregious example. Like, not even comparable, and you over generalized to the point of absurdity.

But its ok. This is a trash topic anyways.

I don't think all Nintendo gamers have the same opinion. I don't think all non-nintendo gamers have the same opinion. Also there is a HUGE amount of overlap, few gamers are 100% exclusive to one company.

I absolutely don't "clearly see both demographic split on things like this".

You literally addressed the actual issue in the original post: PoP2008 and SMO are for two completely different audiences, shown even in ESRB ratings. PoP is a T-rated game from a series that has had M-rated titles, while Odyssey is an E-rated game from a 100% E-rated series.

It's not really a platform difference so much as an audience difference. Mario is meant to be an actual 'all-ages' series, hence the always-E ESRB rating. Prince of Persia, despite having T-rated games, has also had enough of its' modern series be M-rated enough to make it clear that it's trying to skew towards a more adult demographic

Removing game overs from Mario is something that plays towards the younger ages in the 'all-ages' set, whereas removing game overs from Prince of Persia is just making a game that's designed for people in their late teens and early over-21 years easier

I agree with this for a subset of Nintendo gamers, but I don't pretend it's all Nintendo gamers, nor do I pretend it's isolated to Nintendo gamers. I've seen enough console-makers and publishers with fans that claimed DLC was bad only to go back on their word when their favorite series introduced them

Nah we full circle now, they didn't like all the DLC in Fire Emblem Echoes and Amiibos unlock too much.
Honestly, we're still seeing topics on how Odyssey not having game overs will make the game easier.

A lot of games benefit from a game over screen. Games in the collect-a-thon genre do not. The difficulty in these games should be primarily from exploration and puzzles. Having a game over set you back and make you lose all moons you've collected in that level will not add anything to the game.
n00bsaib0t 1 day ago#14
Unless it's something like Dark Souls or something with an iconic game over screen a la Resident Evil I think the idea of a game over screen in general is outdated. Just kill me and let me get back to playing already.

"Game over" is an outdated concept that the genre has mostly moved past. Mario was just very late to the party.
It's not really that you can't lose though, you're just put at the last checkpoint.

Like Shovel Knight is a pretty hard game at times, but you never get a game over in it.

You're confusing millennials with their parents. You know, the people that decided those awards weren't as much for us as for them, coaches, teachers, etc so they don't have to feel bad that they invested in someone and they didn't win. I never once asked for a participation trophy. The current generation is also too young to be able to make this broad sweeping claim about them, so don't try and blame them either.

Honestly think the game over screen is good or bad based on the game.

Number one issue playing this game with family kids? they keep dying and it was always left for me to finish things, a game like "Freedom Planet" having a mode where you take no damage made my little nice love that game

Nintendo did the same thing with Kirby on the Wii and people were split if that was OK or not, at the end Nintendo fanboys were stating having a health bar or getting to retry a level is outdated too lol

College is significantly more expensive now, and degrees are expected if you want to be more than a cashier or something somewhere for minimum wage. prince of persia 2008 is closer to kirbys epic yarn than mario odyssey.

in odyssey you can die but there are no lives or game over, largely because lives are a mechanic which are largely pointless in most games nowadays where you dont get booted back to the begining of the game when dying, and games like the new rayman games, shovel knight and many more had ditched the lives concept.

if you died and respawned on the spot instead of back at a save point then it would make a difference.

Can people stoop acting like you dont die in mario? this video is proof. not only do you die but you start over from the start like any other mario game. you lose coins which coins are basically lives anyways because once you get 100 of them you get a 1up. thats the only difference in odyssey. instead of lives being represented by a mario face and a number. they are represented by coins. The fact that there is a health bar should already tell you that you can die. odyssey's system is even harder because you cant 100 percent the game without coins. Also lives are easy as hell to get in past mario games and people would never run out. coins are much harder to get.
