For most intelligent gamers it isn't

I suspect people are harking on it though because this is a result of the Switch being viewed as a home console by some where an installed 500GB to 1TB HD is standard while anyone whom owns a handheld knows full well SD cards were always going to be the way to go for a portable console. SD cards have always been more convenient and faster with access to flash memory not to mention portable like really, who the hell is surprised by this?

Let's be real Nintendo were never going to shell out huge cash for a cutting edge HDD.

so you would be content if the PS4 and XBox One only had 32GB of internal storage, and not 500GB

Hell, if anything I think they should have 1TB

I don't mind. Why?

Because I'd rather pay for whatever amount of memory I choose myself. I keep hearing people complain how Nintendo should have put more factory storage in the Switch, but jeez, this is Nintendo we're talking about- they'd overcharge much more than what it's worth. And then those same people complaining about storage would then complain about the new price. It's best the way it is. Some people just don't think

That's weird I didn't and I use my Pro for VR as well. Then again I usually delete games I'm not playing and re-download them sometime later. I guess you can't do that with Switch.

Good point but it goes back to my original comment. The Switch being a portable console is a natural fit for SD cards because they too are portable, cheaper, convenient and much faster as well. Earlier I gave Nintendo fans s*** for calling the Switch a handheld when it doesn't have the expedience of one being able to whip it out on a train or at school to play in short burst and shut off and put back in your pocket. However in this case it's not the Nintendo fans that are the problem, it's these f***ing hard core hipsters who thought they were going to get the full benefits of a home console rather than the medium of a portable one.

The only people this is a contentious issue for are ones who don't know exactly what the Switch is.

Yeah suppose that's true to require it out the box for some games.
It all depends on how you play, I've played 100+ ps4 games, and have about 20 or so installed now, and never upgraded from my 500gb

Except for the fact that some of games that launched on the system couldn't fit in the default memory card. Monster Hunter couldn't and I don't think BotW could after the System took up some space.

The main problem with storage is that the Switch comes with a memory card big enough for system memory and save games, not actually buying digital.

Care to explain? 500gb is enough to make it so you can play any game without having content hindered. You're not required to have all of your games installed and with 500 GB, you can still get a fair amount of games installed. I had just over 20 games before I took my external drive from my Wii U to my PS4 and that was with a few games that were between 30 and 60 GBs.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/09/some_retail_nintendo_switch_games_will_require_you_to_own_a_microsd_card

A microSD card will be needed for certain Nintendo Switch games that contain an especially large amount of content and require additional storage for players to enjoy the full experience.

If you purchase a physical version of a game that requires an additional microSD memory card, you will be able to play a portion of the game right out of the box (for example, specific levels or modes).

To enjoy the full game, downloading additional data is required. Depending on the storage requirements for each game, it may be necessary to purchase a microSD card to expand storage space. When purchasing a digital version of the game, it may also be necessary to purchase a microSD card depending on the game's storage requirements and the storage available on the consumer's Nintendo Switch console.

Some Nintendo Switch games will require consumers to purchase an additional microSD memory card to play them. Our expanded storage solution offers flexibility for those who need it to play these games. People can choose exactly how much additional storage space they want to buy, depending on the number and type of games they play, and the amount of content they plan to download.

The problem is though, even if you buy some physical games, you will still need to expand your storage to get all the content of the game you bought, this isn't something where it is just required for digital games. This was never the case for any other system.

Not really you're just a lazy f***er.

Of course it doesn't matter if you buy physical either which let's be real anyone who owns more than monopoly money is going to do anyway.

Mostly because physical games should not be allowed to need patches that are that large. The dev is only doing it because they are too lazy to foot a bill to the larger memory card, making the reason to buy physical thrown out the window. Physical is kind of meaningless on PS3/4 & Xbone/360 with games that install to the harddrive. Yet with those games, the physicals are there to ensure you have the data to install. Not you've got a game where the data must be downloaded from the internet despite being physical invalidating even that.

At times, yep. And the last thing I want is wasted time waiting for Arkham Knight to reinstall everything after deleting its massive install data to clear up room. 3TB external sets that up for me no issues.

Sure, I made the choice not to have to wait for my games to reinstall all their data each time I want to play them after clearing the data. Same reason why I went with a large micro SD with Switch. And 3DS. (Well, micro with the New, SD with the old.)

I typically disagree with @Linetrix, but I actually agree with him on this. I bought the Day One XBox with 500Gb and didn't need an additional harddrive because I play like 1 to max of 3 games at a time. I also have gigabit internet to allow for quickly deleting and adding a game back to my library. My friends were all about getting a 2 Tb drive so they don't have to do this, but its not necessary unless you have s*** internet.

When it comes to balance, Vanguard is Melee and Yu-Gi-Oh is Brawl.
People are freaking out because buying extra storage is REQUIRED to play the physical release. It's required because Nintendo thought it was a great idea to release a console with the same paltry amount of internal storage as the console they released in 2012. NBA2K18 will only be the first game to do this. The flood gates are open now.

PS4 and Xbox One don't REQUIRE you to buy additional memory to play any game. Everything you need (including a game) are in the box. If you are running low on memory, you have the option to uninstall a game or two and are good to go.

The Vita had the disadvantage of needing a proprietary memory card. Switch at least allows for non proprietary micro SD cards - you don't need the specific Sandisk ones.
