I own a Switch, let's get that out of the way.

I got bored with Switch, so I decided to get an N3DS (black friday edition). This is like the 5th 3ds I've owned.

I've been gaming on it non stop lately, and it just really kind of drove home a point that I'd already pretty much realized: Despite what I made myself believe, the Switch is NOT a handheld console. I even hesitate to call it portable, though obviously it is by default.

There's nothing conducive about bring Switch on the go, and while I miss the XL screens, there is a LOT to be said with how easy it is to just through the N3DS in my pocket and walk out the door. I've fallen in love with the 3ds all over again, and would pay good money to see a new version actual next gen (for a handheld, that is) specs still in a clam shell design.

I'm sure the chances are slim to none, which is a bummer because it means I'm basically being phased out of gaming. I pretty much don't play games at home and if I do it's never on a TV so consoles mean nothing to me.

I can dream, right?

But seriously, even though it's not happening, do any of you wish Nintendo would continue the 3ds line?

Zelda

NBA playgrounds
Mighty gun volt
Puyo tetris
Cave story

Just Dance

Skylanders

Shovel knight

Bored was probably the wrong word to use. The games I have I like. It's just when I bought it, I imagined taking it on the go a lot and gaming that way. But for me it just didn't work out that way, due to the size of the system, needed a case etc and it not being so "toss and go" friendly for ME.

Funny you mention it, but I'm playing dq 8 right now and I'd forgotten just how much I love having maps and other relevant info always displayed on the bottom screen. I really don't want dual screen gaming to go away.

I need another 2ds with super mario bros and I'm done with handheld.

Hate it or not but handheld is on its last leg. Pikmin and Miitomo at full price is ridiculous. Those are easily 5 bucks mobile games.

I would be ecstatic if Nintendo would release a new GameBoy, but that's not going to happen, they're pretty much locked in to 2 screens at this point, if they do keep their handheld business going. (Which they probably will, it's been what's kept them going through rough times for quite a while now.)

Why would they give up their handheld line which has consistently sold higher than their home console line over a console with a portability gimmick that only sold 4.6 million in four months?

Switch is Wii U's successor and nothing else's. 3DS will have its own successor announced at E3 2018 or 2019.

Yes. I don't know why but 3ds is such a charming handheld. Really like the clamshell design. A higher res IPS screen would seal the deal for me.

I have a Switch & I was thinking/hoping it would be the future with melding both Nintendo consoles/handhelds into one; & I guess that is/was the idea.
But I too am still playing my 3DSXL way more & I also hope they make a new, more powerful one, but that seems really unlikely unless Switch bombs like Wii U.
I like the Switch, but I love 3DSXL.

yeah I really love my 3ds also. the dual screen, so great.

FE and Etrain Odyssey are great with 2 screens, same with zelda. Looking forward to Samus returns (never played original)

(yes I played FE and zelda before dual screens, just they're nice)
I hope Nintendo finally releases a true successor to the Game Boy Advance. None of this dual-screen gimmick. It's time for the Game Man to be released already.

I really hope they don't. Nintendo showed last gen that they can't support two systems all by themselves anymore, what with higher development costs and all that. They can easily support one system by themselves though.

As much as I love the 3DS, the Switch should be both its AND the Wii U's successor. Making a 3DS successor would just be nonsensical. Unless of course they opt to make a "Switch Mini" that is handheld-only.

I don't really think that's what they showed. Just because one of there systems sucked, doesn't mean they can't support two systems. All they'd have to do is look at what made the Wii U a failure and not do those things.

Adventure games are SO GOOD with dual-screens, metroidvania type games as well (with map on bottom), hell rpgs in general.

I love dual-screen gaming. I like to watch things while gaming, I mean, like shows, youtube, etc running in the background while I game, that's why I've been a ds+psp/3ds+psv gamer for the past 10 year mainly.

The Wii U sucked because Nintendo couldn't support it enough to prevent prolonged droughts early in its life. They've been able to make one game per month for the Switch so far largely because they withheld Wii U games to instead release them on Switch, or are porting Wii U games onto the Switch. Those won't last forever and they'll have to start actually making NEW stuff roughly once a month. That's why I hope by then, the 3DS is dead and there's no other competing Nintendo system. If 3DS was already dead, stuff like Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon, Hey Pikmin, Miitopia, and Fire Emblem Echoes would be coming out on Switch instead, further bolstering the library.

Nintendo's support wasn't the issue. It mostly that no one else did. They made the mistake of trading tech for gimmicks that people don't really care for.

You are disregarding how convenient the 2nd screen is. Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask are so much more fluid with not having to swap between the game and an inventory screen. Same for the Wind Waker on Wii U. Other games made great use of maps and other items to keep from having breaks from the game. That is seriously one of the things that took me out of Breath of the Wild. Having to leave the main game to screw with menus. The dual screen concept is genius when used the right way.

Screw a next console, I am still perfectly happy with my 3DS. Don't care that it's dated, because it's STILL (and always will be) about the games.

FWIW guys, when there is a next console you can also expect a jump in price of games. One of the things that keeps the price of 3DS games down to about $40 (US) is the lower res of the system. With a bump in specs and therefore graphics, expect the price of games to jump as well.

I don't understand how people think the switch isn't portable. Very easily carriable in a small bag or pop off the joycons and put it in your pocket, pretty simple. I like the 3DS but it's really hard to back to the low res look of that system after playing on the Switch. Really hope Nintendo consolidates all development to the switch and then makes a smaller version or something for people clinging onto the DS line

It was an issue. Third party support was inexistent but first party was also weak for pretty much every year but 2014 and mid 2015. Heck, when you exclude paid third party support like Bayonetta, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Devil's Third and Hyrule Warriors even those years were pretty lacking in the U (and also note that the best years on wii u were the weakest first party support for the 3ds). So ya, for people like me who simply want more games instead of five screens, motion crap or smaller stuff, it makes a lot of sense to want them on a single system.

It's portable but not portable friendly. I'm not knocking the system but as I said to begin with, going back to the 3ds is just a harsh reminder that while the switch is portable, it's not conveniently portable. It doesn't realistically fit in a pocket, and it pretty much mandates its on carrying case.

None of that is the end of the world, but my point is that for me, carrying around 3ds which is beyond convenient, I was looking for the switch to replicate that same convenience and it doesn't. I also thought going back to the lower res screen would be impossible but honestly when the games you are playing are a blast, it really doesn't matter.

The first party support wouldn't be an issue if they had 3rd parties on board. I'm looking at their line up of games and I don't see that their first party offerings would be an issue unless there was little to nothing to complement it. 3rd part exclusives are why I feel the 3ds was successful.

Agreed. I like the occasional Nintendo game, like Kirby and Animal Crossing, but the other offerings don't appeal to me nearly as much. I'm burnt out on Mario in general, be it platformers, sports, RPGs, Kart, or even Party. The newer Zelda games don't really appeal to me. I've never cared about Smash.

On the other hand, stuff like assorted River City games, Capcom's, Sega's, and Square's offerings, stuff like Return to Popolocrois, those are what made the 3DS for me.
So far, the Switch has games better suited to a home console, and things I don't care much about. I am Setsuna looks good, but... not much else fits into the style of games I want to play now.

Third party games are pretty important. Eventually I'm going to get a Switch, just like I eventualy got a Wii U in February of this year to play the Wii and Wii U games I missed, but until there's actually stuff I really want to play on Switch, most of which is going to need to be more portable styled, since I don't really like home console styled games anymore (not since PS2/XBox/GC generation really), I can do without one.

Considering how the majority can be played better elsewhere, i'd rather have it for the first party. Given that the top 30 best selling 3ds games are pretty much 3 monhun, 3 yokai and the rest is first party, i am guessing i am not alone. Afaik, there was a somehow relevant third party support during the beginning of wii u life cycle with mario, pikmin and nintendo land peppered in between... so beautiful it was.

I don't think it's true the 3DS's 3rd party games can be played better elsewhere. Even if individual 3rd party stuff doesn't sell as well as 1st party, they are still a vital part of the system's appeal.

Bought an OG.
XL came out, got it and gave OG to nephew.
Zelda XL came out, got it and gave other XL to my niece.
My nieces' family got their car stolen, XL inside. So I bought myself a New3dsXL, and gave niece my Zelda XL.

Sold New3ds XL when switch came out. Bought a 2ds a few weeks ago, thought it too tiny. So I bought a N3ds Black Friday Edition new off ebay, and sold the 2ds to a coworker for $40.

If Nintendo has any plans in making another handheld (Sorry guys, I still don't look at the Switch as a portable-friendly console, despite it being a hybrid between that and a home console), then they should build off of the 3DS in terms of everything, mainly the dual-screen concept because I actually liked having a second screen at the bottom for the sake of inventory/map management. That and the amazing library alongside it.

Basically a copy/paste comment from a few months ago but:

You aren't considering the very few possibilities of a handheld when the home console alongside it is a handheld itself.

If a hypothetical 3DS successor came out, Nintendo would have to be VERY careful about how powerful to make it. It has to be better than a 3DS or there is no point, but if it's TOO powerful, then it partially cannibalizes the market that the Switch occupies. (copy.paste from Rolfin)

If the two consoles are too similar in power, then Nintendo would have to split it's resources straight down the middle. (If it's too weak, it will fail in the market for not even standing up for a f***ing smart phone). We would have two consoles with nearly identical specs in the market at the same time with the only difference being that each one has a separate gimmick. No matter how you spin it, it's an awful idea. If a Third Party made a game for one console, they might as well port it to the other.

The only reason people want a 3DS successor is so they can make sure a few niche franchises are covered. As much as I love Etrian Odyssey, it's not a system seller. Pokemon and Fire Emblem, games that work perfectly fine on a single screen, are system sellers.
Switch has completely taken over 3DS for me. Like you I don't play on the TV much so it's nice to have it to play in whatever room you want.

I always have a bag with me so I always have my Switch as well.
