Nintendo unveiled the amiibo functionality for Metroid: Samus Returns this week. All four figures will work with the game – the original Smash Bros. amiibo and the new ones specifically made for this title. Some of the functionality isn’t that big of a deal. On the other hand, some of it is. One of the big features being scrutinized is the Fusion mode. By scanning the new, squishy Metroid amiibo, you’ll receive access to the mode that provides a new level of difficulty and Samus’ Fusion Suit from Metroid Fusion. There was initially some uncertainty as to whether this would be an amiibo exclusive. In a statement provided to Eurogamer, Nintendo offered an official confirmation. The company said that “this unlockable content is only unlocked using amiibo”. So there you have it – if you want to gain access to the Fusion mode, you’ll need that new Metroid amiibo. The other amiibo unlockables are almost certainly exclusives as well, such as the Zero Suit Samus figure for unlocking Music in the Gallery They can do one thing so right by giving us two new Metroid games then completely s*** the bed.

the worst thing about this s*** is that people who WANT to pay to unlock this stuff CAN'T because the s*** is nowhere to be found. You get Scalpers and Enthusiasts scoop them up first and then 10 year old kid who wants to play Metroid but has no money can't convince his mom that if she doesn't preorder this toy it won't be in the store.

3DS hackers will probably be able to unlock this without the amiibo

None of the unlockables are something I would miss.
To date Nintendo has yet to release an amiibo unlockable I felt left out by except Wolf Link in BotW. I think a Metroid amiibo is a good investment either way with MP4 down the road too.

Why doesn't Nintendo make the amiibo unlocks also available through the eshop? Obviously because they want their overpriced trinkets to retain their "value". The game itself would be available to download digitally, but if you want all the modes and costumes you physically have to track down a limited figurine. How idiotic.

This. If this were offered as DLC as an alternative to buy it, I'd be slightly more okay with this, but locking it behind amiibo entirely is bulls***.

Most people who buy Amiibo don't even use them. They could offer them as an unlock if they really wanted to, but the majority of collectors stick them in a shelf and in some cases don't even take them out of the box. I've only ever scanned maybe 1/10th of my collection in all games. |

Fusion mode is fine, but why must Nintendo put basic things like Art galleries, Music galleries, and a goddamn difficulty behind Amiibos/DLC? A lot of games have galleries already in them when you buy them and a majority have difficulty levels and Nintendo think you should pay for them in this and BotW, what a joke. If they want to actually do something with amiibos, make games centered around them instead of locking basic things with them just so their figures weren't a waste of money to make.

I didn't hate the idea behind amiibos until this topic, when I realized they release a new amiibo for every DLC.
It would actually be kinda cool if there were one Samus amiibo that granted all the DLC in every Metroid game going forward. |

New difficulty level being locked behind an amiibo sounds s***ty, but couldn't care less about the fusion suit, i mean, i didn't hear people b****ing about not being able to unlock the fusion suit in metroid prime because they didn't own a GBA and metroid fusion and the link cable...

It's a double edged sword. If gamers everywhere were to mass revolt and just not buy the game (like that'd ever happen), then all it means is Nintendo thinks "OH GUESS THEY DIDN'T WANT A METROID GAME AFTER ALL" and then we never get another one after Prime 4 or god forbid they cancel it.
But on the other hand, if you still want to f***ing play this thing and play that mode, you gotta play by Nintendo's bullcrap rules. |

In fact, you could replace 'DLC' with any anti-consumer policy and it would still apply.
Every time a chump posts something like this, I never actually see anyone "defending" it.2 energy tanks and 2 suits isn't a big deal to miss out on. even if the suit gives you double defense or something.
but not getting hard mode is pretty lame. metroid is one of the few games i would do hard mode for. generally i don't bother with hard mode unless i'm replaying a game like years after i played it or if it's just one that i loved a lot like devil may cry.The Top Crusader posted......so probably a dumb question, but how do you use amiibos on the 3DS anyway? >_> I don't see how to scan them or whatever.

If this game in particular sells poorly, there's only one conclusion Nintendo will arrive at: 'despite all the vocal fanboyism, no one actually wants classic Metroid anymore.' The concept of 'voting with your wallet' is fine, but there's only two ways you can vote in this case: for the success of a series, or the death of the series. So if you want to vote with your wallet, try to get people to boycott the amiibo, not the game itself. Admittedly you won't make much of a dent since they'll be deliberately short-stocked and will sell like hotcakes regardless, but at least that way you won't be shooting yourself in the foot.Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read.Went from ignoring DLC to implementing some of the worst kinds.
